Scrosoppi’s men crowned OPL champions
Recap the winning run that saw SFC win silverware and TELUS Canadian Championship qualification.

Scrosoppi have won the top men’s division in the Ontario Premier League for the second time in three seasons, following a 2-0 victory against St. Catharines Roma Wolves at St. Francis Xavier.
After scoring six goals in his last four matches, Jacob Carlos put SFC ahead against St. Catharines minutes before half-time. The captain’s second strike of the game then all but sealed the three points in the 82nd minute and qualification for next year’s TELUS Canadian Championship.
Last night’s result was a fitting way to conclude a fantastic season for Scrosoppi, who started the campaign with 2-0 win at St. Catharines back in April. Patrice Gheisar’s side then went on to win another 15 matches, while jostling with reigning champions Woodbridge Strikers at the top of the standings.
SFC went into last night’s match one point ahead of Woodbridge, with players relishing the chance to seal the title on their own terms having not dropped any points since a 2-1 defeat against Sudbury Cyclones on July 11.
This eight-game winning streak began with a 1-0 victory against fellow title challengers Woodbridge. Jeremy Opong scored the only goal of a nail-biting match at St. Francis Xavier.
Back-to-back 2-1 wins against Unionville Milliken and International FC followed, and a 7-2 thrashing of North Toronto then concluded a busy July schedule; Joao Costa took plenty of plaudits in a brilliant team performance as he netted a hat-trick.
This match was the first of five successive fixtures at St. Francis Xavier to finish the season. The August schedule provided SFC the opportunity to build some momentum in front of home support, having already played all allocated away matches earlier in the campaign.
SFC hit the month running with a 2-0 win against Burlington. After scoring against North Toronto, Jacob Carlos and Matthew Wrobel both found the net in their second game on the bounce.
Carlos was on the scoresheet again in the midweek match against Vaughan Azzurri; his penalty was sandwiched between Ethan Hunter’s opener and an Opong double that sealed a 4-2 win.
Scrosoppi’s prolific run reached new heights in their penultimate game against Simcoe County Rovers, as a brilliant team performance put 13 goals past the Barrie-based side.
The result set the mood for the final match of the season, as Carlos’ 15th and 16th goals in all OPL competitions this year put the finishing touches on another outstanding season for the Scrosoppi family.
