Luis Domingos: “It was a very important year for us.”
The women’s program General Manager looks back on Scrosoppi’s first year in the OPL top flight and identifies some key takeaways for the club and local community.
The 2026 season was another memorable campaign for Scrosoppi’s women’s team, with a mid-table finish in a maiden campaign among the Ontario Premier League’s top 10 women’s teams.
The talented squad reached the OPL 1 division by winning the second-tier title in 2025 under then-head coach John Yacou. It was a promotion-winning year that saw Yacou earn a coaching role with Inter Toronto in the Canadian Premier League soon after.
Stepping up into the vacancy was Luis Domingos – already a familiar face around St. Francis Xavier and the Milton soccer community as an established Scrosoppi youth coach.
Domingos wasted no time making his mark, earning the OPL Women’s Coach of the Month award for April with a perfect start in the league and the cup, before guiding the team to a sixth-placed finish in a tight battle for a top-four spot.
With the dust now settled on year one, Domingos sat down to reflect on the season and what it means for him, Scrosoppi’s players, and the local Halton community.
So, Luis, how do you reflect on the 2026 season?
It was a season of ups and downs, but one that was extremely valuable in helping us identify what we need to improve and what needs to be done to perform better next time.
It was a very important year for us, especially because it was our first season in the [Ontario] Premier League [top division]. The goal was to finish the season with the belief and understanding that we belong at this level and that we can compete with the best teams.
What was the highlight of the campaign?
I believe it was a goal we scored against North Mississauga. From a coach’s point of view, that goal represented everything we had been working on: a team that wanted to control possession, recognize and exploit the spaces when they appeared, and play an entertaining, positive style of football. It was a moment that showed the identity we were trying to build throughout the season.
We want to be a team that plays beautiful, entertaining football. We want to be aggressive, create opportunities, and always look to score goals while staying true to the style and identity we have built.
After their first season in the OPL top flight, what's next for SFC players? Are some good opportunities in the pipeline?
For sure. I believe the training environment we created, combined with the level and intensity of the games we played, definitely prepared the players for school soccer and the professional environment. It also helped them develop important habits, skills, and experiences that will support them throughout their careers.
We’re also not going to stop training. We’ll have the younger players training with us and playing games that really challenge us. It will be a really good environment to be part of, with everyone pushing each other and continuing to develop.
What is your message to your players as they look ahead in their soccer careers?
Talent alone doesn’t solve any problem. You have to combine your talent with relentless hard work. Bring the highest intensity every day, stay committed to improving, and always strive to be the best version of yourself.
What are your biggest learnings from the 2026 season, and how will they drive you forward?
There is absolutely no time or space to drop our level. We cannot take our foot off the gas. The opponents aren’t going to do it for us, and neither should we. We have to maintain our intensity, standards, and focus every single day.
This was the season in which I improved the most as a coach, but I also know there is still a long way to go. I need to continue evaluating myself, adapting my approach and my personality to what the team needs, and finding the best ways to bring the group together and get the best out of them.
Why should the community continue to support Scrosoppi?
We’re growing every year, and it’s pretty clear to our players, parents, and community that we want nothing but the best for them.
It was really nice to see everyone come out and support the men’s team in their last home game. It was a big party, and it was great to see the whole club coming together. We want to see more moments like that, and we want everyone who was in the stands to one day be on the field, helping us create more moments like this together.
I just want to thank everybody who has supported me over the past few years at Scrosoppi. I truly believe soccer is not something you can do alone. You need people around you, and you need good people around you. I’m very lucky and grateful to have those people by my side.
