Boys team thriving on the local and global stage
SFC’s Executive Director Shayne Griffin reflects on the 2011 Boys squad’s achievements in this year’s outdoor season.
It has been a year to remember for Scrosoppi’s 2011 Boys team, who won three titles in three different countries between April and October.
The first of three titles came in Portugal, as the squad travelled to Cascais to compete in one of the world’s largest international youth soccer tournaments, the IberCup. They faced top European youth teams and eventually defeated the hosting side, Academia Alcoitao, 3-0 in the final.
Buoyed by their overseas experience, they then went on to win the IModel C2 title at home in Canada, and the Cobras FC Invitational across the border in Rochester, New York.
This is in addition to reaching finals in the Ontario Cup and the Top Rated Challenge Cup, even while competing up an age group in the latter.
Working closely with the boys throughout the season was Scrosoppi’s Technical Director, Shayne Griffin, who is not only impressed by the trophy haul, but also by how the players have developed and thrived together.
“These competitions give our players the opportunity to challenge themselves against different opponents, styles of play, and levels of competition,” he said.
“Competing internationally in Portugal, travelling to Rochester, and facing strong teams here in Ontario all require them to adapt, make quicker decisions, and perform under pressure. Then, playing up a year in the Top Rated Challenge Cup added another challenge, testing them against older, more physically mature players.
“The benefits go well beyond football. Travelling and competing together helps build independence, responsibility, and stronger relationships. The boys learn how to prepare, support each other, handle setbacks, and remain focused when the stakes are high.
“We’re proud of the results, but the greatest value is seeing the boys grow as players, teammates and young people, and helping them understand what’s possible through commitment and working together.”
As the players look to progress their passion for soccer into careers, these experiences and achievements not only allow them to develop skills to compete at higher levels, but also to attract attention from professional clubs.
That itself brings benefits to the entire Scrosoppi family. Echoing Patrice Gheisar’s comments following the Ontario Premier League title secured by the men’s team this summer – when one team wins, the whole club wins.
As the Scrosoppi name continues to grow in Canada and overseas, that in turn can provide more opportunities for players developing in the club’s pathway.
Griffin continued: “This success shows that SFC academy players have the ability, commitment, and resilience to compete with strong teams locally and internationally – even against older opponents. It reflects their hard work, belief in each other and willingness to embrace new challenges.
“The highlight of the season for me was seeing that switch finally go on. When the boys realized just how good they are and began to believe they were a team others would fear facing.
“That confidence changed how we approached games, trusting our ability and each other, and that belief was a major factor in winning the IberCup in Cascais and reaching the Ontario Cup final this summer.
“Winning championships builds confidence, while reaching finals and falling short provides valuable lessons in resilience and growth. These experiences also help prepare our players for the demands of higher-level football and potential post-secondary opportunities.
“The achievements this year are special, but watching the team recognize its own potential was the most rewarding part.”
