“Pride, professionalism, and class” – Shayne Griffin reflects on April’s Iber Cup success

Scrosoppi put Milton on the international map by fending off top youth sides to win a U15 boys title in Portugal.

Scrosoppi FC's boys U14 and U15 teams travelled to Cascais, Portugal to compete in the prestigious IberCup, one of the world’s largest international youth football tournaments. The IberCup attracts top academies and clubs from across the globe, providing young athletes with the opportunity to compete at a high level while representing their communities on an international stage.

The Scrosoppi FC U14 side put forth an excellent showing, advancing to the semifinals in their tournament before being narrowly eliminated. Their performance demonstrated strong technical ability and determination against quality international opposition.

The highlight of the trip, however, came from the U15 team, who delivered an outstanding tournament performance to be crowned IberCup Champions. Over the course of six hard-fought matches, the team showcased exceptional talent, resilience, and composure.

Their journey to the title included impressive victories over GS Carcavelos, Central 32, and Academia Alcoitão in the knockout stages, culminating in a dominant 3-0 championship-winning performance in the final.

Throughout the competition, the players represented both Scrosoppi FC and our local Milton community with pride, professionalism, and class. Their success is a testament not only to their hard work and dedication, but also to the strength of grassroots soccer development within our Milton region.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the club and highlights the growing impact of Canadian youth soccer on the international stage.

Coming up in the SFC Academy

We take a deeper look at three big opportunities coming up for youth soccer players in Milton, starting with this week’s PA Day Camp.

It’s been a brilliant month for Scrosoppi’s academy so far after our U15 boys were impressively crowned IberCup champions in Portugal, and the U14 boys reached their semifinals.

While the IberCup put Scrosoppi on the global map, the soccer opportunities at home in Milton are coming thick and fast. Read on to find out more.

PA Day Camp – April 24

Our PA Day camp returns this week, on Friday April 24 from 9am until 1pm. Players will be led by SFC coaching staff through an immersive training experience that covers both technical and tactical aspects of soccer, helping to improve their game on and off the ball.

Our coaches include several familiar faces at Scrosoppi, including Ontario Premier League star Alexia Rhooms and former Canadian Premier League forward Massimo Ferrin, allowing players to learn directly from high-level experience. The camp will be overseen by Scrosoppi’s experienced Director of Football Operations, Patrice Gheisar.

The camp will be held on the turf field at St Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School in Milton, Ontario, and the price for one attendee is $129 (discounts apply when registering multiple participants). Please click here to register.

House League – End of May

As part of the club’s recreational programs, House League is a fun, inclusive, and development-focused soccer program designed to help players learn the game, build confidence, and develop a lifelong passion for soccer, all in a positive and supportive environment.

Players will be able to take part in one training session and one gameday per week, and there are opportunities for age groups from U5 all the way up to U14.

In the week commencing May 25, we will be holding a House League Open Day where players can meet coaches and technical staff, pick up uniform, and receive more information about the season kick-off. Don’t miss out by registering today.

Summer Camps – Start of July

Our ‘Train Like The Pros’ Summer Camp returns in 2026 and will be ready for players who are looking to be challenged and improve their skills and understanding of the game.

Led by Scrosoppi FC staff, participants will be taken through fun and engaging daily activities, allowing them to express themselves, be creative, learn valuable skills, and become better soccer players.

After Jadea Collin and Noelle Henning were called up to April’s CANW20 camp, we are taking a closer look at the SFC players who have recently represented their nations.

Jadea Collin

A testament to her ability, Jadea Collin has been part of Canada’s U20 squads since 2023 when she played seven games at just 17 years old.

She scored Canada’s first goal at the 2025 Concacaf Women’s U20 Championship in Costa Rica, and went on to be named in the tournament’s Best XI after she helped her country win the competition for the third time.

Last week she was called up to the CANW20 roster once again, ahead of the squad’s return to Costa Rica for an April camp and two international friendlies.

Noelle Henning

Joining Collin in Costa Rica is goalkeeper Noelle Henning. After growing up right here in Milton, Henning has starred for Canada across three different age groups – U15, U17, and U20 – and she has now amassed more than 2,200 minutes on the international stage.

She also played a big part in Canada’s Concacaf victory last year, winning the tournament’s Golden Glove award and being named in the Best XI. She’s knocking on the door to the senior team and was called up by Casey Stoney to the women’s international series last summer.

With Henning being an experienced winner alongside Collin as part of NDC Ontario in the Ontario Premier League, the duo will have a big impact at Scrosoppi when they return from camp.

Jaya Lecky

Earlier this year, Jaya Lecky starred for Jamaica in all their matches during Concacaf Women’s U17 Qualifiers. She also bagged both a goal and an assist in their 5-0 win against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

She also played more than 1,500 minutes for Hamilton United in last year’s Ontario Premier League, and after starting in Scrosoppi’s OPL Cup victory opener at the weekend she could be set to record similar numbers this season.

Sanai Sereboe

At the age of 17, Sereboe was called up to the Ghanaian U20 squad last fall. She played 26 games for Scrosoppi in the 2025 Ontario Premier League season, across three different competitions, and impressed enough to be recognized by her nation.

Ghana are currently in contention to qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup taking place this September. She has already started this year strong with a goal for Scrosoppi on Saturday, and another strong campaign could secure her place on the plane to Poland.

Milton Today: U15 boys reign supreme at international tournament

The Scrosoppi FC U15 boys met spring with big-stage success last week, turning back all challenges at one of the biggest international youth tournaments.

Firing on all cylinders at Portugal’s Ibercup, the local squad delivered three straight victories in the knockout round before toppling the host Academia Alcoitao 3-0 in the championship showdown.

Tristen Brown opened the scoring with a perfectly executed volley inside the box, while Zein Elaraby and George Antoun built on that early lead with a low-cross finish and penalty shot deposit respectively.

Dante Corsetti and Ashton Patterson split the cage work in the title win shutout, which followed victories over GS Carcavelos, Central 32 and Academia Alcoitao.

“Belief and commitment to each other is what got us through,” said head coach Shayne Griffin. “The experience of being together for the week brought the players closer together, and they started supporting each other like family on and off the field.”

Garnering interest from several academies – including Sporting Clube de Portugal – Brown was an offensive catalyst throughout the week and Leland Strobie-Griffin anchored a formidable backline that conceded just one goal through the knockout round.

Scrosoppi’s U14 boys also showed strongly at the tournament, advancing to the semifinals before being narrowly eliminated.

Patrice Gheisar: “We want to provide a home for top talent”

Ahead of the Ontario Premier League season, our Director of Football Operations talks about playing philosophy, the importance of youth development, and signings for 2026.

After winning three trophies in the last two seasons, Scrosoppi’s first teams head into the upcoming Ontario Premier League campaign with plenty of success to live up to, but this time under new management.

Patrice Gheisar has an impressive record in the Canadian game and will be the head coach for SFC’s men in the new-look OPL – rebranded from League1 Ontario during the offseason to bring closer alignment with the Canadian Premier League.

He’ll also be providing guidance to the Scrosoppi women’s teams as they enter their first season in the OPL top flight following their promotion from the second tier last year. They will kick off SFC's 2026 schedule with an OPL Cup match against Burlington on April 11.

Success at this level is not unfamiliar to Gheisar, who secured the men’s league title with Vaughan Azzurri in 2022, before going on to coach Halifax Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League.

During his first few months in Milton, he has been building the foundations for further success at Scrosoppi, beginning with providing support for players, coaches, and staff across the club.

“I’ve been coaching for 21 years, and the most important thing I’m going to lean on is making sure I’m here to support everyone and their vision,” he said. “I’m not here to change anything.

“I’ve learned a lot about people skills. Every coach has a different pathway they want to take and I want to be able to support them with that. I also want to support our players' development and help them pursue scholarships and professional opportunities.

“The most important thing for me is supporting our coaches, our players, and the community.”

Following a three-year absence from the Pro-Am level while he managed Halifax, Gheisar has been impressed by the quality of talent in Ontario upon his return.

“Sometimes you forget how many good players there are in this province, and when you go away and come back, it’s like your eyes are wiped clean and you’re reprogrammed.

“I’m blown away by the athleticism, the technical ability and the quality of the players. Our players have a great deal of hunger and determination, not only for the team, the club, or our programs, but also for themselves.”

Scrosoppi’s purpose is to develop young players and guide them onto a successful career path, and the new boss wants to build the OPL programs around bright young talents.

“We want to take a little bit of a different direction by featuring some really good young players. That's something I'm really drawn to, helping with the development of young players in a senior men’s and women’s setting.

“I’ll also be working with the youth teams on making sure that we have a consistent game model throughout the club for the boys and the girls. I’ll be supporting them and making sure that they understand the curriculum at each age group, while our House League program helps bring our youth players into more competitive teams.

“I would love to say, ‘We have a player in our OPL team that’s been at the club for eight or nine years’.”

Signings have been coming thick and fast in Milton as Gheisar builds squads that will challenge the best teams in the OPL.

Several familiar faces have returned, as well as some eye-catching talents, including siblings Chimere and Chiamaka Omeze, and CANW20 stars Jadea Collin and Noelle Henning.

“My focus has been finding a selection of players who fit the way we want to play and who are hungry.

“I want to leave the year better than where we started, on the field and off it. On the field, the men’s team has been extremely competitive, finishing in the top two in the past three years and winning last year’s cup competition.

“I’m not here to say we’re going to go undefeated and score 200 goals, but we want to start the year as a seven, and finish as a ten.

“Alongside this, it's really important for me to culturally develop a very healthy off-field environment and establish a team in both men's and women's OPL that will be sustainable on its own for the next three to four years.

“It’s fixing for now, and for the future. Part of that means having young players who will have a bigger role, and having a vision of building not just a team, but a club.

“We want to provide a home for top talent.”

Scrosoppi’s pathway to the professional game

Players are rising through the ranks at Scrosoppi and aspiring for a career on the field, but how does SFC provide the platform for success?

With youth camps, high-performance training programs, elite coaching, and competitive Pro-Am teams, Scrosoppi Football Club is leading by example when it comes to providing a platform for those wanting to reach the top of their game.

The route from youth soccer, through the Ontario Premier League, and to the professional game has proved fruitful with more than 350 players signing pro contracts after performing at OPL level since 2014.

Read on to learn more about the four important areas in Scrosoppi’s player pathway.

Recreational: House League and Saints Skills Academy

As part of the club’s recreational programs, House League offers fun and inclusive sessions, while still ensuring players are developing their overall abilities. The sessions aim to help with learning the basics of the game, alongside building confidence and developing a lifelong passion for soccer, all in a positive and supportive environment.

The Saints Skills Academy develops soccer skills through fun activities and drills, alongside professional training methodologies. With sessions run by our Head Technical Trainers, Luis Domingos, Zaavy Brown, Santos Ameen, and Sebastian Lopez, players of all abilities are challenged to ensure they make significant improvements in their skills.

Competitive: Grassroots and Elite

Scrosoppi FC's elite youth programs are geared towards high-potential players who are seeking high-quality training, development and playing experiences. Players can expect to be coached in line with the top provincial, national, North American and international standards.

The Elite Grassroots Program runs from U4 to U12, and the Elite Competitive Program runs from U13 to U18. They provide a platform for young players to progress their game ahead of potential opportunities in college and university soccer, the Ontario Premier League, and beyond.

Teams train and play matches regularly, in addition to taking part in soccer tournaments, festivals and excursions. Video analysis will also be scheduled with teams to further aid their understanding of the game.

Pre-Professional: Ontario Premier League

Scrosoppi is a well-established club in the Ontario Premier League , having achieved lots of success in the Pro-Am game recently. The men’s side approach the 2026 season with twin aims of defending the League Cup and reclaiming the regular-season title they won two years ago, while the women’s team will compete in the OPL’s top women’s division for the first time.

The program, which includes first teams, second teams, and U20 squads, is led by highly experienced coach Patrice Gheisar. During his career, the 50-year-old has been instrumental in developing some of the top Canadian talents, including Dayne St. Claire, Kamal Miller, and Alistair Johnston.

Signings for SFC’s 2026 first team squads include some returning talent, OPL award-winning stars, and new faces bringing a variety of experience – from youth internationals to the Canadian Premier League, and soccer overseas. Meanwhile former Toronto FC youngster, Christian Pitt is an eye-catching for the U20 squad, having already been called up for Trinidad & Tobago at U17 level.

Professional: SC Vianense

Scrosoppi are proud owners of SC Vianense in Portugal , and players in Milton have the opportunity to access coaching, scouts, and trials at the club.

It’s a direct route to the professional game for high-potential Scrosoppi players, opening up the opportunity for players to secure their first professional contract and springboard their careers to the top level of the game. Marcus Channer and Matias Cortes are two players who have played for SFC and SCV.

This Portugal connection is in addition to SFC’s large network of contacts at the NCAA and professional game in North America, and provides an elite training environment for players right here in Milton.

OPL 1: Taking a deep dive into SFC’s 2026 schedule

The Ontario Premier League regular season starts one month today, meaning it’s time to get out your calendar and prepare to support Milton’s teams.

Highlights

Season kicks off April 18
First home game is April 25
Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship holders visit May 1 – SFC vs Simcoe
Cup Final rematch is June 13 – SFC vs Vaughan
Women’s season concludes with consecutive away trips in July
Men’s season concludes with consecutive home games in August

Men’s OPL 1: Kick-off April 18

Scrosoppi’s men will kick off their OPL title pursuit in St Catharines. The Roma Wolves players and staff always put on a show at Club Roma last season, making their den a tough place to go to pick up points.

While this opening fixture is taking place up the road from Club Roma at Kiwanis Field, the St Catharines faithful will no doubt bring the season-opening vibes and give SFC an early challenge.

An equally tough trip to Sudbury Cyclones follows – another club with a loud home support who will be aiming to hit the ground running in their first season in the OPL top flight.

Last season’s title rivalry with Woodbridge Strikers resumes as early as Matchweek Three in 2026, with SFC visiting the reigning divisional champions. OPL debutants International FC are then SFC’s hosts in Matchweek Four – SFC’s fourth successive away match to open the new campaign.

Friday, May 15 will see Scrosoppi’s first home game as newly promoted Unionville Milliken come to St Francis Xavier in Milton. It’s followed up by SFC’s first midweek fixture in 2026, which is a trip to face North Toronto in the GTA.

Other notable fixtures include the first matchup with Patrice Gheisar’s former side Vaughan Azzurri on Saturday, June 13 in Milton. This is also the first rematch between these sides since Scrosoppi’s 3-1 cup final victory last season.

Sudbury, Woodbridge, International FC, and North Toronto all visit Scrosoppi in July as they catch up on home matches heading into the regular-season run-in.

Three consecutive matches in Milton will conclude Scrosoppi’s season in August, with Burlington, Simcoe County Rovers, and finally St Catharines scheduled to visit.

Women’s OPL 1: Kick-off April 19

The Women’s OPL 1 season kicks off on Saturday, April 18, with all eyes on Scrosoppi and Vaughan Azzurri for the sole matchup on the Sunday.

SFC would have already taken to the field by that point, as they face Burlington in the OPL Cup First Round on April 11. The men’s team have a bye to the Second Round.

The first home game for Scrosoppi’s women is earlier than the men’s, with Saturday, April 25 set for North Mississauga’s trip to Milton. The following week Simcoe County Rovers come to town after winning last year’s OPL top flight and the Women’s Inter-Provincial Championship against Pro-Am title-holders from Alberta, BC, and Quebec.

Waterloo United are the third visitors in three consecutive matchweeks, before SFC head to North Mississauga on May 16. Woodbridge Strikers and Guelph and United then host SFC to round off the month.

There are three home games back-to-back in June with FC London, Woodbridge, and NDC Ontario all visiting, and a further three to start a jam-packed July with Guelph, Vaughan, and North Toronto all coming to Milton.

There are a total of six games scheduled for July, and Scrosoppi’s season ends with what are expected to be difficult trips to NDC Ontario, Simcoe, and North Toronto – all of whom have won OPL titles across the last two years.

A Sports Town: Stars born in Milton

With soccer talent emerging in Milton, we've taken a look at some athletes from the town who made their names with sporting success.

Not only is Scrosoppi FC a club where young players develop and flourish, but Milton has also been the home of plenty of sporting talent. From the Women’s NBA to the Stanley Cup, these are some of the best sportspeople from the town.

Kayla Alexander

Picked in the first round of the 2013 WNBA Draft, Alexander began her professional career at San Antonio Stars. She was born in Milton in January 1991, and had previously signed for Syracuse University and played basketball from 2010 to 2013, earning the most all-time appearances for the school.

And the records didn’t end there: she also became their all-time leader for points scored, blocks, free throws attempts, and field goals. Thanks to this success, she was selected eighth overall in the Draft and began her career in Texas. After spending five seasons in San Antonio, which was interspersed by multiple short-term deals overseas, she was traded to Las Vegas Aces.

Alexander is also a long-serving member of the Canadian Olympic team and made her debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where the team came ninth. Two years later, she played a key role in helping Canada at the FIBA World Cup.

Travis Gerrits

As one of the more artistic sportspeople to appear in this article, Gerrits has an impressive career in aerial freestyle skiing. In his school life he attended W.I. Dick Public Middle School and Milton District High School, often missing out on his education to train and compete.

He began skiing at the age of six, following a keen interest in gymnastics, and within four years he was competing at provincial championships. As a teenager he was part of the Canadian National Development team thanks to his aerial prowess, and in 2010 he earned a spot at the Winter Olympics.

Plenty of success followed, including most notably a silver medal in the 2013 World Championships.

John Tonelli

Tonelli, now aged 68, enjoyed an illustrious career in ice hockey. Born in Milton in 1957, the leftwinger signed for the Toronto Marlies OHA team at the age of 15, and was the first Miltonian to play for them in more than two decades.

After moving south and starring for Houston Aeros, he was selected 33rd overall by New York Islanders in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft and went on to achieve a lot of success. He was a Second Team All-Star in 1982 and 1985, and appeared in five consecutive Stanley Cup finals in the ‘80s, winning four of them.

Following further NHL stints at Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings, Tonelli eventually wound up his career back in Canada and retired after playing for Quebec Nordiques. When he had hung up his skates, the winger finished with 1,028 regular-season NHL appearances, 325 goals, and 511 assists.

Noelle Henning

The fourth person in the article is somebody at the start of their sports career, and has huge potential to take Canadian soccer by storm.

Nineteen-year-old Henning is a goalkeeper will play for Scrosoppi during the 2026 season after signing in the offseason. Born to a German father and Canadian mother, Henning grew up in Milton playing basketball and volleyball, alongside competing in track, and was playing organized youth soccer before she was six.

At the age of 15 Henning made her debut at international level, and she went on to win bronze with Canada at the Concacaf Women-s U17 Championship. She has since represented CANW20 in the U20 competition, and was recognized as the tournament’s Best Goalkeeper as Canada won gold. We look forward to seeing her in a Scrosoppi shirt in 2026.

Patrice Gheisar in numbers

Two months on from Patrice Gheisar's appointment as Scrosoppi's new Director of Football Operations, we've taken a look at some of the numbers behind his career.

1 – Gheisar was the first person to become a Canadian Premier League head coach straight after winning League1 Ontario (now named Ontario Premier League).

2 – Gheisar’s Halifax Wanderers qualified for two Canadian Premier League Playoffs.

3 – Gheisar spent three seasons managing Halifax Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League, and third place was his side’s highest position in final regular-season standings under his stewardship.

9 – Including Scrosoppi, Gheisar has been a head or assistant coach for nine first teams across club and college soccer.

21 – Gheisar has been coaching for 21 years.

50 – Gheisar celebrated the big five-o birthday in June last year.

81 – Gheisar’s win ratio as head coach of Vaughan Azzurri across 2021 and 2022 was more than 81 percent.

106 – Defenders Kamal Miller and Alistair Johnston are two soccer professionals who developed under Gheisar at Vaughan, and they have since amassed 106 Canada Men’s National Team appearances between them.

This year in Canadian soccer: Looking ahead

There is plenty to look forward to for soccer fans in Canada, with some exciting competitions just around the corner.

From the Pro-Am level, all the way to the world stage, 2026 is going to be a big year for soccer in Canada.

While North America prepares to welcome international sides – and some of the biggest names in the game – who will be touching down for the men’s World Cup this summer, Scrosoppi are looking to thrive once again in a new-look Pro-Am soccer scene following their men’s and women’s titles last year.

Read on to find out what Milton soccer fans can look forward to in 2026.

Ontario Premier League

Previously named League1 Ontario, the province’s leading Pro-Am soccer competition has been rebranded to the Ontario Premier League for the upcoming season, with the League1 Canada alliance becoming Premier Soccer Leagues Canada.

While there’s a new look on the league front, Scrosoppi’s ambitions are much the same, and our men’s and women’s sides are heading into their campaigns with plenty of optimism and determination.

Both of SFC’s first teams will be competing at the top of the Pro-Am game for this season, following the women’s team's first-placed finish in the second tier last year.

The men’s team lifted the divisional title in 2024, but finished as the runners-up last summer behind Woodbridge Strikers. It was not a year without silverware, though, as victory over Vaughan Azzurri in August saw them lift the League Cup for the first time.

There is a new leader at the helm for the upcoming season, with Patrice Gheisar joining the club following three seasons at Canadian Premier League side Halifax Wanderers. The 50-year-old achieved plenty of success in Vaughan before moving to the CPL, and has plans of repeating similar success in Milton.

Several players with lots of OPL experience have also joined the men’s team, including prolific goalscorers Reshaun Walkes and Lowell Wright, and defenders Markus Pusztahegyi, Chimere Omeze, and Peter Bandula reinforcing the backline.

New faces have also arrived at SFC for the women’s team, including forwards Taylor Fazzari and Chiamaka Omeze, and experienced Canadian internationals at youth level in Jadea Collin and Noelle Henning.

TELUS Canadian Championship

Although Scrosoppi have not qualified for the 2026 competition, the Canadian Championship is one that SFC knows well, having faced Atlético Ottawa in the preliminary round of the 2024 campaign.

Fifteen clubs from across MLS, the CPL, and Premier Soccer Leagues Canada will take part to determine Canada’s best club team, with tight and tense matches for fans to enjoy. Those who prove successful will qualify for the annual Concacaf Champions Cup, with the chance to then progress to the FIFA Club World Cup.

CPL & NSL

The top level of Canadian men’s soccer kicks off once again on April 4, when Forge FC host Atlético Ottawa. The sides were the top two in last campaign’s final standings, with the former finishing in first place, just two points ahead of their opponents.

There is also a new name in the league, FC Supra du Québec. Following preseason matches against Scrosoppi and others, they will make their debut against Pacific FC and will be looking to impress as the new team on the block.

On the women’s side of the game, the Northern Super League kicks off for 2026 with AFC Toronto travelling to Vancouver Rise on April 24. The visitors dominated the regular season last year to finish on 51 points, 12 ahead of runners-up Ottawa Rapid, but fell to the Rise in the inaugural NSL Final. This opening match already has plenty of feelings behind it.

Concacaf competitions

Several Canadian teams have taken part in the men’s Concacaf Champions Cup, including Vancouver Whitecaps, Vancouver FC, and Atlético Ottawa. The tournament’s quarterfinals are coming up, with Whitecaps hosting Seattle Sounders in a Cascadia rivalry match.

There’s also the Concacaf W Champions Cup penned in for this summer, and international competitions such as the Concacaf W Championship and Concacaf Nations League to look forward to at the end of the year.

FIFA World Cup

The biggest soccer tournament in the world arrives in Canada this summer. Thirteen matches take place across the nation, with Toronto and Vancouver set to host some nail-biting games, while the rest are played across the USA and Mexico (all three countries have qualified in separate groups).

Canada will face Qatar and Switzerland in Group B, and either Italy, Northern Ireland, Wales, or Bosnia and Herzegovina, who are yet to qualify. This is their second consecutive tournament, after qualifying for the Qatar World Cup in 2022, which was the country’s first since 1986.

The World Cup begins on June 11, one day before Canada’s opening match against one of the four countries yet to qualify.

Don’t forget to also note down the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in your calendars. Set to be hosted by Poland this September, it’s likely we’ll see lots of faces from the OPL competing for Canada – maybe even some from Scrosoppi.

We’re looking back at some key quotes from Scrosoppi stars, and providing motivation for young players to continue working hard in 2026.

Senai Sereboe: Stay patient

Sereboe enjoyed her breakout season in 2025 with Scrosoppi in League1 Ontario (now the Ontario Premier League), helping to achieve promotion to OPL 1 for the upcoming season.

Last year, the young defender was called up to the U20 Ghana camp ahead of their qualifying games for the 2026 World Cup in Poland. With a bright future ahead, she has some important advice for those in a similar position.

She said: “My message would be to always believe in yourself and stay consistent. There will be challenges, but if you work hard every day and stay patient, opportunities will come.”

Jacob Cabral: Dream big

Another Scrosoppi youngster with big dreams is Cabral, who was honoured in the OPL end-of-season awards after plenty of fantastic performances. He made 18 regular-season appearances as SFC finished as the runners-up in their division standings.

The midfielder already has a wealth of experience in the Canadian Pro-Am game, and is returning to Milton in 2026 for another season in black, white, and gold.

He said: “I would say dream big, always work to get better every day, even if it’s by one per cent. In soccer, being satisfied means that you are falling behind someone who is working harder, so always keep that in the back of your mind.”

Alexia Rhooms: Believe in yourself

The 27-year-old got her first taste of the professional game in Portugal last year after a spell with Vilaverdense in Liga BPI, following a successful year with Scrosoppi in 2024.

Not only is she developing her on-field game, but the defender also has aspirations of coaching the next generation of soccer players in Canada and wants to help develop as many future stars as possible.

She said: “Work hard, stay consistent, and believe in yourself. Enjoy the journey – it’s not just about the destination. Take every training session and game as a chance to learn and grow and always play for your love of the game.”

Shayne Griffin: Providing a platform

Scrosoppi’s Executive & Technical Director, Shayne Griffin, has played a key role at SFC since 2021, and has been part of overseeing the Milton-based club’s growth and success from youth to senior level.

He’s helping to make SFC a number-one stop for soccer players in Milton looking to progress their game and join the pathway to the professional levels.

He said: “We’re the only OPL license holder in Milton, and it’s a growing population, so it's exciting for us to be able to provide that platform for young talent, and that’s going to be our major contribution.”

Ontario Premier League – representing Milton in the Pro-Am scene

The OPL (previously League1 Ontario) has seen plenty of young players learn their trade and rise through the ranks of the Canadian game. An impressive number of these have also pulled on the Scrosoppi jersey, including Jacob Cabral and Jahkaya Davis who both won individual awards in the 2025 OPL season.

As the only OPL license holder in Milton, the club offers clear pathways from the start of a young player’s career to the starting lineup of a top Pro-Am team.

House League – regular recreational soccer in Milton

As part of the club’s recreational programs, House League offers fun and inclusive sessions, while still ensuring players are developing their skills. The sessions aim to help with learning the basics of the game, alongside building confidence and developing a lifelong passion for soccer, all in a positive and supportive environment.

Players can expect a high standard of sessions, with official Scrosoppi FC uniforms, a dedicated team coach, club technical staff leading skills-based practice, game leaders on match days, and end-of-season medals for all players.

Saints Academy Skills – level up your game

This program is aimed at young pre-Rep (U5-U7) and grassroots players (U8-U13) and looks to develop soccer skills through fun activities and drills, alongside professional training methodologies.

This program will challenge players in a fun and engaging training environment, improving individual abilities, while ensuring teamwork is one of the top priorities. With sessions run by our Head Technical Trainers, Luis Domingos, Zaavy Brown, Santos Ameen, and Sebastian Lopez, players of all abilities are challenged to ensure they make significant improvements in their skills.

The next session block (seven weeks) begins on Monday, March 2, 2026, and runs every Monday until Monday, April 27, 2026 (excluding March Break on March 16). Sessions take place from 5pm-6pm at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School in Milton.

For 2026, SFC introduces the PA Day Camp, which provides an immersive training experience led by high-quality coaches Santos Ameen, Massimo Ferrin, Alexia Rhooms, Luis Domingos and Rick Viteritti, under the leadership of our newly appointed Director of Football Operations, Patrice Gheisar.

Remaining consistent with the High-Performance Camp ethos, sessions are built around the Scrosoppi FC Game Model. The camp will emphasize technical excellence, intelligent decision-making, and meaningful time on the ball in a professional training environment.

Patrice Gheisar looks ahead to Scrosoppi’s first friendly of 2026 against professional opponents.

Scrosoppi face a tough test on February 6 to begin their 2026 preseason with a friendly against the Canadian Premier League’s newest team, FC Supra du Québec.

SFC's Quebec-based opponents will be aiming for success in what is their first year on the field, and a strong preseason is important in order to carry momentum into Canada’s top flight for men’s soccer.

Nick Razzaghi takes charge of FC Supra after spending four seasons with League1 Québec side CS Saint-Laurent, so he will need no introduction to the Pro-Am game ahead of their clash with Scrosoppi.

On the other side of the dugout, new Scrosoppi boss Patrice Gheisar is excited for the test and feels his squad will benefit from facing opposition from a higher division.

This year, his side enter a new-look Ontario Premier League – formerly known as League1 Ontario – after a second-placed finish in the 2025 regular season and winning the League Cup. Now, as Gheisar’s squad begins to take shape, it’s time for Scrosoppi’s first test in 2026.

“This is a great opportunity to test ourselves against an elite team and elite players, and set a standard for where we want to be,” said Gheisar.

“FC Supra players come from an environment where they are training daily. This will be their first game in Ontario, which is something to celebrate.

“The match also allows us to provide an opportunity for our members and supporters to watch our newly-formed team, and for our players to feel their energy and backing.”

Scrosoppi have already strengthened during the off-season, with the likes of prolific Pro-Am goalscorer Reshaun Walkes and 2025 Men’s Championship All-Star Markus Pusztahegyi joining the ranks, as well as familiar face and award-winning midfielder Jacob Cabral.

Gheisar is confident about the signings, but fans can expect to see SFC's youth dominating the lineup this Friday.

“We are currently limited with some personnel, so we are focusing on giving some of our young players a chance. We will be looking at some players who we are currently reviewing to see how they fit in the picture.

“We have many players who I believe will represent our club and also what we stand for. For example, Reshaun Walkes, who was also our first 2026 signing, will provide goals and danger in attack.”

Gheisar has spoken about bringing the local community together, and wants to impress the Milton crowd from the get-go.

“We want to connect our academy with the first team and make them proud. We want to take this opportunity to showcase entertaining football with our attack and aggressiveness in defending.

"Most importantly, we want to show our passion to our fans and the club.

“This match against FC Supra allows us to show what we are capable of. We don’t often face challenges like this.

Quick-fire questions with Massimo Ferrin

Ferrin joins Scrosoppi as a youth soccer coach for 2026, and discusses his targets in the role, how his professional playing career will help, and what he looks for in a player.

Massimo Ferrin has been a rising star in the Canadian game since signing for Vaughan Azzurri in 2015. The forward began his career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, playing for the UAB Blazers during his studies. In 2018 he transferred schools to Syracuse University, where he completed college, being named in the All-ACC Men’s Soccer Academic Team.

The 27-year-old worked closely with Scrosoppi’s new Director of Football Operations, Patrice Gheisar, while both were at Vaughan. In 2020 he experienced his first taste of professional soccer, spending two seasons at Loudon United in the USL Championship before returning to Vaughan for the 2022 season.

His best season for Scrosoppi’s well-known Ontario Premier League (formerly League1 Ontario) opponents came in this period, when Vaughan lifted the Premier Division title under Gheisar’s guidance, and Ferrin found the net 23 times in 15 appearances – subsequently being named the league’s Most Valuable Player.

Thanks to these performances, he returned to the professional game and signed for Canadian Premier League outfit Halifax Wanderers for the 2023 season. He made his mark instantly in the CPL, finding the net eight times while registering three assists. Ferrin spent one more year at the club before moving to York United for the 2025 season.

In all competitions the attacker scored six times in 30 appearances for York, now called Inter Toronto. He now brings his experience in the Canadian game to Scrosoppi, where he will be coaching the next generations of stars in Milton.

First of all, Massimo, what are you most looking forward to about this new venture?

The opportunity to work with youth players and pass on the experience I’ve gained through my career as a player, and watching the boys develop and improve in their abilities throughout the year.

Which of your previous experiences will help you the most in this role?

My experience as a professional player allows me to relate to the boys, even at the youth level, and start to lay the foundations needed to give them the opportunity to play at the highest level achievable.

What are the first responsibilities and tasks that you will be tackling in your new role?

I will ensure to bring intensity and professionalism to training, while creating a fun and competitive atmosphere for the boys.

What are you looking for from your new players?

A willingness to learn, focus and enjoy themselves in every training session or game.

What impact do you envisage having on the team?

Having a unique perspective because of my experience playing at a high level for many years. Understanding what’s needed at this age, as well as in the future, to set these boys up for success.

Heading into 2026, then, what goals do you have for yourself and your team?

By the end of the year, I want players to feel that they understand the game better and have improved their quality, both individually and as a team.

Scrosoppi’s Director of Football Operations discusses the importance of combining training across different League1 Ontario age groups.

Patrice Gheisar has a track record for developing young players and helping them to perform at the highest level in Canada, and understands the value that League1 Ontario brings as a platform to reach the professional game.

The 50-year-old recently joined Scrosoppi’s staff to oversee all soccer programs at the club – a new venture following his head coach roles at Vaughan Azzurri and Halifax Wanderers – and has set out some exciting plans for 2026.

For one, Gheisar plans to integrate the club’s younger players, who will make up SFC’s League2 Division teams, with the senior figures from the Premier Division sides.

By combining players from across the club's League1 Ontario teams into one training group, Gheisar aims to bring the best out of every player at Scrosoppi, as well as allowing for rotation opportunities for young players across the Premier and League2 divisions.

“We see our entire League1 program as a pool of players who can develop on different timelines,” he said. “This mindset brings adaptability in our squads.

“If there's a Premier Division player who's not firing on all cylinders, then there’s an opportunity to give them League2 opportunities. But if there is a League2 player who is firing, can we move him or her up to play well in the first team?

“Training is a great place to integrate our young players, who are graduating from the academy or are looking for something different, into and around the first team.”

When it comes to young players performing in League1 Ontario’s top tier, Jacob Cabral was named the Men’s Premier Division’s Young Player of the Year for the 2025 season after a stellar breakout season. Meanwhile, Women’s Championship MVP Yasmin Castillo has earned minutes at both League2 and first-team level, and played a big part in SFC’s promotion to the Women’s Premier last summer.

With the standard of League1 Ontario rising each year, Gheisar feels that young players can learn a lot by being closely integrated with the senior squad.

“There are certain standards of high-performance football, such as the speed of play, learning mentally how to deal with the game and the pressure of being excellent, and holding yourself accountable.

“When you’re at that development age, around 17, and you’re playing with 25-year-olds, they’re going to be demanding you to do things correctly. That will be a big part of your progress.

“We don't want players moving through a revolving door, coming in and out. We want our younger players to understand that while they may not be a key player today in the Premier Division, they will be next year or the year after.”

As well as improving pathways on the pitch, Gheisar also values the off-field benefits that come with integrated training for youth and senior players.

“We celebrate the integration culturally. The way we train after a loss and after a win, those are all really important.

“We are looking for players who are at that starting point in their careers with the ambition of growing. We want to have them around our players and see how they perform in our environment.”

The former Canadian Premier League coach, and 2022 League1 Ontario title winner, joins Scrosoppi’s backroom and coaching staff.

Patrice Gheisar has joined Scrosoppi to become the club’s new Director of Football Operations and head coach of the men’s first team.

The 50-year-old has more than two decades of coaching experience and has spent time with York University Lions, SC Toronto, Ryerson University Rams, and Vaughan Azzurri since stepping up to first-team positions in 2010. In 2019 he became the head coach of Seneca College Sting and Vaughan Azzurri, before moving to Canadian Premier League side Halifax Wanderers.

His rise to the professional game followed a series of successes in League1 Ontario. He won the Men’s East Division with Vaughan Azzurri in 2021 and was named the division’s Coach of the Year, then a year later claimed the same award for the Men’s Premier Division after winning the overall league title.

He hit the ground running in his first job in the Canadian Premier League, and was Manager of the Month for June. He went on to guide Halifax to the CPL Playoffs twice in his three seasons at the helm, and set club records across goals and points scored.

Gheisar has a reputation for developing rising stars in the game, and his move to Milton is the start of a new opportunity – one which will see him provide guidance and leadership across all soccer pathways at Scrosoppi.

He said: “After speaking to Scrosoppi and understanding their vision, I saw enormous potential which really attracted me to this role.

“I’m grateful for everything that Vaughan Azzurri gave me personally and professionally, and for the trust Halifax showed in me to lead their CPL team. I’m hoping to bring similar success I had at those organizations to Scrosoppi, who are giving me the opportunity to tackle a new role in soccer.

“It’s really important for me to culturally develop a very healthy off-field environment and establish men’s and women’s teams that will be sustainable on their own for the next three to four years – not only building for now, but building for the future.

“The club is in a key area of Ontario where there is a lot of talent, and as the club grows, I expect our youth teams to grow and feed into our men’s and women’s teams.

Highlights from 2025

With 2026 just around the corner, it is time to take a look back at a handful of highlights from another successful year at Scrosoppi.

SFC teams up and down the age groups were looking to build on previous seasons, as new faces joined the ranks in the search for league titles and trophies.

L1 Cup champions

The Scrosoppi men’s first team headed into 2025 as the defending champions of League1 Ontario’s Men’s Premier Division, after lifting the trophy on the final day with a 3-0 victory over Burlington last year.

Star striker Tomasz Skublak returned the team following an impressive year in front of goal that earned him the league’s MVP prize, and reinforcements were brought in to join him, including Orlendis Benitez Hernandez who signed from rivals Simcoe County Rovers.

Scrosoppi narrowly missed out on top spot in the regular-season standings by two points, but it would not be a season without a trophy. Wins over Windsor City, North Toronto, and Simcoe, and a 3-1 victory in the final against Vaughan Azzurri saw the side lift the Men’s L1 Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

Ottawa-bound

Thanks to the men’s team’s 2024 success, John Yacou’s side qualified for the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship, alongside fellow League1 champions Edmonton Scottish from Alberta, TSS Rovers from British Columbia, and FC Laval from Québec.

Although the valiant Scrosoppi team did not progress after a 2-0 defeat to Canadian Premier League outfit Atlético Ottawa, it was a close-fought contest, and another step in the right direction for a squad who have continued to develop and improve in the Canadian game.

Promotion party

It was an entertaining season in the League1 Ontario Women’s Championship, with Scrosoppi’s first team achieving promotion with a first-place finish. It was the 2025 MVP Yasmin Castillo’s late goal at Pickering on the final day which secured their spot in the Premier Division next year. With the game hanging in the balance in the last five minutes, her strike moved the team onto 30 points, ending any doubts about not securing top spot.

That all-important goal took Castillo’s tally to eight for the campaign, joint with teammate and Forward of the Year Jahkaya Davis as their partnership flourished. With only six points between first and sixth by the end of the season, the team’s unbeaten run between June and July looked all-the-more crucial come the final standings.

Several players were represented in the L1ON end-of-season awards, with Castillo and Davis alongside Ella Cahill and Tierra Bennett in the Women’s Championship’s All-Star XI. Head Coach John Yacou was also named as the division’s Coach of the Year after another impressive season.

Youth sides flourish

There was plenty more development for Scrosoppi’s youngsters in 2025, with the club’s youth programs continuing to thrive and prosper.

The boys U15 side won silverware this year at the St Catharines Roma Spring Kick Off, and the U17 girls team secured the MYSL Indoor title in the 2024/25 season, reached the Ontario Cup quarterfinals in the summer, and impressed at the FC Durham Showcase this past weekend.

A 6-0 win over SC Toronto and a 1-1 tie with Alliance on the first day preceded two 1-0 victories against GS Black and Oshawa Kicks respectively on Day Two, making up an unbeaten record at the showcase.

Jeff Valcius appointed as Men’s League2 head coach

The former Vaughan Azzurri coach joins Scrosoppi and takes charge of the club’s second team in League1 Ontario.

Jeff Valcius brings plenty of League1 Ontario knowledge, experience, and success to Scrosoppi ahead of 2026, as he switches Vaughan for Milton and takes charge of SFC’s Men’s League2 Division team.

Following a four-year stint at his previous club Vaughan Azzurri, where he won the 2024 Men’s L1 Cup, the 2022 Men’s Premier Division title, two League1 Ontario reserve titles, two OPDL Charity Shields, and an OPDL Cup, he is looking forward to getting to work at a club that shares a similar vision to his own.

“Joining Scrosoppi appealed to me because it was clear that this club is an organization committed to excellence, development, and a strong club culture – values that align closely with my own coaching philosophy,” Valcius said.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to contribute to the growth of our players and to work alongside such a dedicated staff, as well as continuing the winning culture within the community.”

Scrosoppi’s Men’s League2 Division side finished sixth out of eight teams in the regular season last year, while the first team won the Men’s L1 Cup and narrowly missed out on a second consecutive Premier Division title.

Work begins immediately for Valcius, who has very ambitious aims for his team in 2026.

“My first responsibilities will be to influence the culture and add to the standards that make Scrosoppi great, but also to become a brand ambassador and emulate what Scrosoppi can offer to the community as a whole.

“My previous experience of being a high-performance coach will help with this role as I bring a wealth of experience over to an already established culture that's eager to grow.

“I believe my most important impact will be that of culture and direction, bringing to the program an unrivalled work ethic and instilling a sense of confidence and camaraderie. I am looking for trust and passion, dedication to the culture, and overall eagerness to work.

Thank you, John Yacou: The L1 head coach departs Scrosoppi

The men’s and women’s first-team head coach has departed the club to pursue other opportunities – and he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, determination, and trophies.

John Yacou has announced he is leaving Scrosoppi Football Club following his third season leading SFC senior teams in League1 Ontario.

After joining as head coach in 2023, he oversaw the men’s side for three seasons and accomplished plenty throughout his tenure, including a Premier Division title in 2024, an L1 Cup trophy in 2025, and two divisional runners-up finishes during that time.

In 2024, he coached Scrosoppi’s inaugural League1 Ontario women’s team as they took to the field for the first time, and just a year later he helped them achieve a first-place finish to secure promotion from the Women’s Championship to the Premier.

In regular-season games with the senior men’s team John won an impressive 45 out of 62, taking SFC from 12th in the Men’s Premier standings in 2022 to being consistent title challengers across the next three years. He coached and developed plenty of quality, often getting the best out of experienced names and up-and-coming talent.

The record of Scrosoppi’s women in their first two seasons has been just as remarkable under John’s guidance, with 19 victories in 34 league games. While they came second in the 2024 standings, they claimed promotion on the final day of the 2025 season with a late 2-1 victory at Pickering.

Following the Men’s Premier 2024 title, John received the division’s Coach of the Year accolade – an award for which he was a finalist in 2023 after reaching the division’s playoff final. He then claimed his second successive Coach of the Year honour in 2025, this time in the Women’s Championship after he guided the squad to silverware and promotion.

Outside of League1 Ontario competition, John also led Scrosoppi’s men’s side in the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship and set up his team to provide a stern test for professional outfit Atlético Ottawa, who went on to win the Canadian Premier League later in the year.

In a statement on Instagram , John said: “Three years with some of the greatest people I’ve ever worked with. The life of a coach is filled with so many highs and lows; we only realize how precious the highs are when we experience the lows.

“As this chapter comes to an end, I owe everything to everyone who supported this journey. To my staff – thank you for always having my back, for your endless hard work and sacrifice. I can truly look at every single one of you and say I have a friend for life.

“To the organization – thank you for trusting me to lead your top teams. Your commitment and dedication to excellence inspired me to give my all for the badge. Together we shared wonderful moments that will last a lifetime.

“And finally to my players – wow, what a blessing! Maybe the compliments were a few but the love for you was unconditional always, from the 6am sessions to leaving the field at midnight we built something that we can all forever be proud of. You made me not only a better coach but a better person and for that I’ll always be grateful to share the pitch with you.

“Each and every single one of you became a brother or a sister to me in these past few seasons; as a family we won, we lost, we laughed, we cried, and lifted trophies together. I love you all and thank you for allowing me to share this part of my life with you.”

Scrosoppi’s General Manager, Sara Raulino, added that the club’s gratitude runs deep.

“Thank you to John for pouring his heart into leading our L1 men’s and women’s teams,” she said. “His passion, commitment, and relentless hard work have shaped the success of both squads and lifted Scrosoppi FC to the top of the table.

“He has left a lasting mark on our club and on everyone who had the privilege of working with him. We wish him nothing but the very best in his next chapter, and we know he will continue to inspire and achieve great things in football.”

The club's Executive Director, Shayne Griffin, also added: “Thank you so much to John for his time and dedication to Scrosoppi.

“He elevated the standards of what is expected and what can be achieved at the League1 level. His passion for the game, his players and those around him is unmatched and will be missed. I wish him all the best in his next steps.”

Heading into 2026 with another trophy for Scrosoppi’s men to defend, and a new division for the women's team to face, the club wholeheartedly thanks John Yacou for all of his hard work and the success he brought, and we wish him the best for his future endeavors.

Shayne Griffin: We have some forward-thinking minds

The SFC Executive Director discusses some key takeaways from League1 Canada Converge 2025, and how Scrosoppi can help grow the game in Milton and across the country.

Following this year’s League1 Canada Converge , representatives from every club in League1 Ontario are looking ahead to the 2026 season and their potential impact in growing the game on home soil.

This year’s event included 13 different sessions and 28 speakers , with approximately 200 people in attendance, giving club leaders, staff, and coaches the chance to share and encourage the best on- and off-pitch methods at League1 level, taking learnings into the new year and beyond to grow the game in Canada.

Shayne Griffin has played a key role at Scrosoppi since 2021, and has been part of overseeing the Milton-based club’s growth and success from youth to senior level. He was also a speaker at Converge, providing guidance around building livestreams on a budget as part of The Activation Engine session.

Following a successful weekend at Converge, he is looking forward to further improving the game with Scrosoppi and League1.

Firstly Shayne, how was Converge this year?

It was extremely beneficial. Being able to connect with other clubs, other executives, who are in the same roles in their clubs, discuss what their pain points are, share possible solutions, the best practices between clubs, and understand that most of our pain points are the exact same as the other clubs, so we’re not on an island.

If you had to choose your biggest takeaway from the event, what would it be?

The biggest takeaway for me is the immense potential that League1 has. There are a lot of brilliant minds involved in the league, from leadership to membership, and people with very unique experiences, talents and knowledge.

If we're able to share a lot of this information with each other, the league has incredible potential to really grow if everyone has the same collaborative mindset, and events like this really foster and encourage that.

You also presented at Converge. How was your panel?

It was well received. We had a lot of people come up after and commend us and ask how we came up with some ideas.

My presentation covered livestreaming on a budget, and it was about sharing resources to clubs that maybe can't afford to have a separate company come in and livestream. It was meant to help and share our reality, and maybe our reality is the same as someone else’s, so they can benefit from the same knowledge and experiences that we have.

Leading on from Converge, how can Scrosoppi help to grow the game in Canada?

We have some forward-thinking minds in the club. We have supportive ownership too, and with our future plans alongside leveraging our relationships and our affiliations with clubs across the world, especially in Europe and the Middle East, it’s a tremendous opportunity for us to focus on giving young players and high-potential players chances here in Canada and then springboarding them to our contacts.

We’ve seen the likes of Luka Juricic getting opportunities in the Canadian Premier League, and those are examples that we really want to drive home, emphasize, and repeat. We want to offer that to as many of our young players as possible.

We’re the only League1 license holder in Milton, and it’s a growing population, so it's exciting for us to be able to provide that platform for young talent, and that’s going to be our major contribution.

The senior men’s FIFA World Cup heads to Canada in 2026. What was it like being around conversations about this event at Converge?

When you really take it in, I don't think it's going to hit most of us until it's here, but to understand the magnitude of this type of event, and to be involved somehow, even if it's a small part of it, it’s really exciting.

Who is Luigi Scrosoppi?

Scrosoppi FC is named in honour of the patron saint of of footballers, who worked tirelessly to support disadvantaged children through physical activity.

Scrosoppi has been one of the leading clubs in League1 Ontario in recent years, with three trophies in two years across men’s and women’s competitions.

But the roots of SFC go a lot further back than 2020, when the club was initially founded. Luigi Scrosoppi was born in Udine in 1804 as one of three boys. At twelve years of age, he began preparing for the priesthood at the Udine diocesan seminary, and after his ordination in 1827, he lived an active priestly life and made a strong commitment to supporting orphans as part of his work. In 2001, he was canonized by St. John Paul II.

With other priests and a group of young teachers, he dedicated time and effort to educate poor and abandoned girls from Udine and the nearby countryside. Through this, he undertook numerous charity projects and raised funds to establish homes for vulnerable children, while also encouraging them to engage in physical activities and sports.

Fast forward to the 21st century, and it was an Austrian football fan named Manfred Pesek who thought soccer needed its own patron saint, rather than Saint Sebastian, who had long been recognized as the patron saint of athletes. Considering Scrosoppi’s love of sports and desire to help young people through it, Pesek and a group of researchers found the perfect fit.

Their efforts resulted in the announcement on August 22, 2010, when Scrosoppi was officially named the Patron Saint of Soccer by the now Bishop of Sankt Polten, Austria, Alois Schwarz, and it was marked by the unveiling of a new statue of him holding a soccer ball.

Now, in 2025, Scrosoppi FC represents values that are developed through sport, such as fairness, perseverance, diligence, and determination and continues to be inspired by Luigi’s impact in his community.

Luka Juricic: Scrosoppi provided me with continued growth

The Halifax Wanderers striker discusses life at Scrosoppi, what he learned this season, and his message to young players.

Luka Juricic’s career is developing into a promising one, as the 20-year-old earned a professional contract with Halifax Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League back in September.

The midfielder began at ProStars Academy, and in 2022 moved to Puskas Akademia in Hungary to play for their U19s and men’s second team, before relocating to Croatia to play for Zrinski Osjecko.

After four years in Europe, he returned to Canada and soon became an important player for Scrosoppi in his first League1 Ontario season.

He made 16 appearances across the Men’s Premier Division and L1 Cup in 2025, finding the net four times, and he also scored two in two matches in the Men’s League2 Division.

In September, following some impressive performances for SFC, he secured a move to Halifax in the top flight of Canadian soccer, and now reflects on his spell at Scrosoppi as a positive one that helped him develop.

“My year at Scrosoppi provided me with continued growth and development in soccer,” he said. “My training staff pushed me to focus and work to my fullest potential, while supporting me and encouraging me to reach for more.

“It was a continued learning experience for me, which made me challenge myself and appreciate my coaching staff.

“My time with Scrosoppi has continued to remind me to work hard, be a team player and to always stay humble.”

After winning the Men’s Premier Division in 2024, Scrosoppi were hunting more silverware in 2025, and a 3-1 victory against divisional rivals Vaughan saw the team lift a second trophy in two years – their first L1 Cup.

Juricic’s main highlight from his time at the club is his two goals in the final, with his second-half strikes under the lights proving to be the match-winners for John Yacou’s side.

Now, looking ahead, he is ready to step up and make his mark in the professional game.

“I would like to play in the CPL – God willing. I pray to God and thank him for everything he’s given me.”

And for other young players like himself, his advice is always to put in the work.

“Expect a lot from yourself. Train hard, be ready for the challenges that are ahead of you, and enjoy every moment.”

Scrosoppi Down Under: Introducing Michael Pezzano

Passion for soccer and religion led Australia-based Michael to find Scrosoppi FC and he now follows the club from afar.

Michael Gerrard Pezzano is an 11-year-old soccer fan from Australia, who defied a severe hip dysplasia at birth to now play soccer for the Western Sydney Condors U12 Division 1 team.

Soccer and religion have always been a huge part of his life from a very young age – even his middle name is inspired by Saint Gerard of the Catholic Church as well as the former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Alongside playing soccer, Michael also plays his part in the Horsley Park parish and is working on achieving his Pope Francis Award which is offered by Catholic schools in Sydney.

In preparation for his Confirmation to the Catholic Church, he wanted to find a saint who loved soccer as he did, and he came across Luigi Scrosoppi who is the patron saint of soccer players.

After Michael’s mother, Angela, reached out to Scrosoppi FC, the club sent a merch package to Michael to celebrate his Confirmation and welcome him to the SFC family.

Alexia Rhooms: It feels like home

The defender reflects on her time back in Canada following a professional spell in Portugal, as her coaching career continues to lift off.

In Alexia Rhooms’ previous Q&A, she had returned from Portugal after experiencing professional soccer with Vilaverdense.

Since then, she has helped Scrosoppi achieve promotion to the League1 Ontario Women’s Premier Division and taken her youth coaching career even further.

The 27-year-old made the move across the Atlantic to play in the top division of the women’s game in Portugal – Liga BPI – after appearing 19 times for Scrosoppi in the 2024 League1 Ontario season.

The Toronto Metropolitan University graduate could be playing in the top tier of L1ON in the summer of 2026, while also developing the next generation of Canadian soccer players.

How would you describe your experience since returning to Scrosoppi?

My experience at Scrosoppi has been unforgettable. It feels like home, with a high-performance environment that pushes me to grow as a player while also giving me the chance to coach the U11 and U9 teams.

Being one of the first female coaches at the club has been really special, and it’s made my time here both challenging and rewarding on and off the field.

How do you reflect on the 2025 season?

The 2025 season was tremendous, as we advanced to the Premier Division in just our second year in League1. It was an amazing achievement for the club and I feel proud and grateful to have been part of that journey.

I love going to training knowing I get to see my soccer sisters at training. They always put a smile on my face.

What has been your main highlight from your time at the club and why?

My main highlight has been helping grow the grassroots women’s side. After returning from Portugal, I was able to step right back into coaching with the U10 girls, and I’ve never felt more connected to a team. I truly love coaching them, and it’s been rewarding to support their development and be part of building something meaningful at the club.

How do you prepare for each gameday?

I prepare by listening to my favourite music in my AirPods, doing my slick-back braid, and just mentally visualizing what I'm going to do on the field.

How pleased are you with your progress so far this year, and why?

I’m really pleased with my progress this year, and a big reason is the support I’ve received from Scrosoppi. From the start, Coach John and Shayne have always had my back, and I truly wouldn’t have been able to take the step to play professionally without their belief and guidance.

What's next for you following the League1 Ontario season, and what are your upcoming targets?

Following the League1 Ontario season, I’m focused on continuing my professional playing career while also growing as a coach.

On the field, my target is to keep developing my skills and contribute at the highest level possible. Off the field, I want to keep building meaningful connections with my players and help grow the grassroots women’s side, creating opportunities for young athletes to thrive both technically and personally.

Has playing for Scrosoppi helped prepare you to take on your targets?

Absolutely. Playing for Scrosoppi has prepared me by pushing me to compete at a high level and challenging me to grow both technically and mentally. The support from the club, along with the opportunity to coach, has helped me develop leadership, resilience, and a strong work ethic that I know will carry me into the next stage of my career.

Do you have any interests beyond soccer, and if so, why are they important to you?

Yes, one of my biggest interests beyond soccer is fashion. I love being able to express myself through style, and it gives me balance outside of the game. Fashion is important to me because, just like soccer, it’s a way to show personality, confidence, and individuality

What’s your message to younger players aspiring to play high-level soccer at Scrosoppi?

Work hard, stay consistent, and believe in yourself. Enjoy the journey – it’s not just about the destination. Take every training session and game as a chance to learn and grow and always play for your love of the game.

Sanai Sereboe: Every detail matters

Following her call-up to the Ghanaian U20 squad, the 17-year-old reflects on how Scrosoppi has helped her development.

Having spent time at Erin Mills, North Mississauga, Brampton, Burlington, and now Scrosoppi, Sanai Sereboe is coming into her own on the field.

The full-back enjoyed a breakout season this year with Scrosoppi in League1 Ontario and was a crucial part of both the Women’s League2 Division side and the Women’s Championship team that secured promotion with a first-place finish.

Her progress earned her a call-up to Ghana’s U20 women’s team, and Sereboe is aiming to help the Black Princesses qualify for the upcoming U20 World Cup in Poland next year, in addition to starting her college career at Grambling State University.

Congratulations, Sanai, on selection for national team camp. What was your biggest takeaway from the experience?

My biggest takeaway was understanding the level of discipline and consistency it takes to perform at the international stage. Every detail matters, from how you train to how you recover. Carrying those habits forward will help me stay prepared and keep improving.

What are the types of things you did at camp?

On the field, we focused on sharpening technical skills, physical fitness, learning the system of play, and a lot of finishing. Off the field, we spent time in team meetings, recovery sessions, and sleeping.

Did playing for Scrosoppi equip you for the camp?

Playing for Scrosoppi prepared me really well for national team camp. The competitive environment pushed me to raise my level, stay disciplined, and adapt quickly. Training and playing with older and more experienced teammates helped me build confidence, which I was able to carry into camp.

My experience at Scrosoppi was really positive. The team was very welcoming, even as a younger new player, and they pushed me to work hard and improve both on and off the field.

What has been your main highlight from your time at the club and why?

My main highlight at Scrosoppi was winning the league by beating Pickering, which allowed us to advance to the Women’s Premier. That game was such a defining moment because it showed how all our hard work as a team paid off, and being part of that success was unforgettable. As well as my goal against Unionville!

Which person from Scrosoppi has helped to bring the best out of you?

One person from Scrosoppi who really brought the best out of me was Lexy [Alexia Rhooms]. Even though she wasn’t here for the entire season, she constantly pushed me to work harder. We still have plans to train together in the off-season, and I really admire her work ethic and commitment. She’s definitely someone I look up to.

How proud are you of your achievements this year?

I’m very proud because this year has shown me how important faith and hard work really are. From winning the league with Scrosoppi to making it to the next stage in the World Cup qualifiers, I couldn't ask for more.

Looking ahead, what are your targets for this year, and beyond?

This year, my goal is to continue developing as a player, winning more games with my team, and earning more opportunities at the international level. Off the field, my goal is to graduate with honours and prepare for the next step of playing at Grambling State University.

What’s your message to younger players aspiring to play for their national team?

My message would be to always believe in yourself and stay consistent. There will be challenges, but if you work hard every day and stay patient, opportunities will come. Don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone and always have faith in God.

Scrosoppi players recognized in League1 Ontario awards

As the League1 Ontario Premier and Championship end-of-season awards conclude for another year, four Scrosoppi personnel are taking away individual honours.

Yasmin Castillo was voted as the Women’s Championship’s Most Valuable Player in 2025 after her crucial part in earning Scrosoppi promotion to the top tier of the L1ON pyramid. She played 15 games in the division and scored eight goals.

Forward Jahkaya Davis also netted eight for Scrosoppi in 12 games, and she became the Women’s Championship’s Forward of the Year, with teammate Ella Cahill joining her as one of the three finalists for the prize.

There was also an individual honour for John Yacou. After finishing as a finalist for the Men’s Premier Coach of the Year accolade, Yacou’s inspired promotion to the Women’s Premier saw him handed this award for the Women’s Championship.

In the Men’s Premier, Jacob Cabral was named Young (U20) Player of the Year, having played more than 1,300 minutes in the Scrosoppi side that finished second in the regular-season standings.

Rising All-Stars

In addition to the individual winners, there were also celebrations for Scrosoppi players who were chosen as a finalist for an award and named in the All-Star teams.

Starting at the back, Elisa Paolucci was in the top three for the Women’s Championship’s Goalkeeper of the Year after Scrosoppi conceded just 18 goals all season. Matthew Paiva was a finalist for the Defender of the Year in the Men’s Premier and named in the division’s All-Star First Team alongside teammates Omari Cotterell and Tomasz Skublak.

Skublak was a finalist for Forward of the Year in the Men’s Premier, having had a productive season as the division’s reigning Most Valuable Player.

While it was Castillo who took home the coveted MVP prize for her competition this time around, she was also named as a finalist for the Women’s Championship’s Midfielder of the Year and Young (U20) Player of the Year – such was the mark she made on the league in 2025.

Castillo, Jahkaya Davis, and Ella Cahill all earned starting spots in the Women’s Championship’s All-Star First Team, in addition to defender Tierra Bennett who recorded 16 regular-season outings this season.

Evana Eyubeh was awarded with a spot in the division’s All-Star Second Team following her 11 matches and single goal in 2025, rounding off a very successful haul for Scrosoppi players from the end-of-season awards. Congratulations to all!

Jacob Cabral: Dream Big

The League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division’s Young Player of the Year discusses his impressive first season at the club.

Scrosoppi’s youth is consistently improving and impressing on the field, and one example of this is midfielder Jacob Cabral, who enjoyed a standout season in 2025.

The 20-year-old already had plenty of L1ON experience having spent a year at Guelph United and two seasons at ProStars FC, and since making his move to SFC he has been an important part of the midfield as the club won the L1 Cup and finished as runners-up in the league in 2025.

His individual efforts were rewarded this fall as he was named the Young (U20) Player of the Year in the Men’s Premier Division – the top tier of Pro-Am soccer in the province.

It is not just the soccer field where Cabral is chasing success, as he looks ahead to completing his university degree in anthropology – opening doors to careers in forensics or teaching. But right now his ascendency in soccer is showing no signs of slowing down.

Jacob, congratulations on a stellar 2025 season. How do you reflect on the campaign?

This past season was great. Despite somewhat of a slow start and some ground to gain, we managed to keep ourselves focused and strived to contend for both the Men’s Premier title and the cup simultaneously.

What has been your main highlight from your time at the club so far, and why?

The main highlight of my time at Scrossopi was lifting the L1 Cup. It was something that we thought we were deserving of and worked hard the entire season to achieve. Winning some silverware with a great squad was something that we were proud of and brought us all together.

Overall, my time at Scrosoppi has been amazing – a top program with great coaches, staff, and players who dedicated themselves to seeing the group succeed.

Following the L1 Cup success, how pleased are you with your own progress so far this year?

I am really happy with my season; I thought that I grew a lot not only as a player but as a person as well. I managed to accumulate a lot of minutes for a team which has been so successful in recent years and has consistently good performances throughout the season. I managed to help the team out with some important goal contributions during the season, too.

Who at the club has helped to bring the best out of you?

I would say Coach John [Yacou] has helped me the most and developed me into a player who has the capability of striving to the next level. The training sessions were always super intense, and Coach would often give me constructive criticism to help me improve. John is also a great person off the field, always open to communication and more like a friend.

How do you prepare for each gameday?

I try to get a good night’s rest, sleeping at least eight hours, eating breakfast, walking and visualizing how I want the game to go. The pre-match meal is always something nutritious but light, just so I feel mobile on the pitch. During the leading moments to the game, I like to listen to music and get myself psyched for the match ahead.

What's next for you following the League1 Ontario season?

Hopefully I can get drafted into the CPL this year. Having a good university season is also something that I want to continue from my previous years.

I want to complete my degree in anthropology and hopefully become either a teacher or pursue forensics. Having an education was always super important to me, and if soccer doesn’t work out, then I have something to fall back on.

Has playing for Scrosoppi helped you prepare for what's coming up?

Scrosoppi has prepared me in the best way possible, as the training intensity and quality has been top-notch and kept me sharp. There are plenty of veterans on the team who have had plenty of experience as well, and they are always people I am looking to learn from.

What’s your message to younger players like yourself, aspiring to play high-level soccer at Scrosoppi?

I would say dream big, always work to get better every day, even if it’s by one per cent. In soccer, being satisfied means that you are falling behind someone who is working harder, so always keep that in the back of your mind.

Lastly, make sure to enjoy every moment on the field, never take for granted what playing on the pitch every day means, and set goals for yourself to be the best version you can be.

Luis Domingos: Shining a light on Summer Camp

Coach Luis looks back on a successful summer of soccer drills, games, and tournaments at Scrosoppi.

With the leaves turning in Canada and the fall season in full swing, academy coach Luis Domingos shines a light on a successful 2025 Summer Camp.

Domingos has been at Scrosoppi for three years, and saw coaching as a way to continue his passion for the sport after hanging up his playing boots.

Alongside his responsibilities as a coach in the Scrosoppi’s League1 Ontario program, mainly with the Women’s League2 Division team in the third tier of L1ON, Luis is an academy coach and was a key figure in this year’s Summer Camp.

The attending children were exposed to skill activities and mock-game scenarios that enabled them to practice before going into matches. The most popular parts of the camp were the small tournaments and matches, which Domingos also admitted were his own highlights as he reflected on a successful summer.

“This year’s Summer Camp was very positive,” he said. “We had more kids compared to last year and the high level of engagement creates a realistic and competitive environment, which is very beneficial for their development.

“We exposed the kids to scenarios they would encounter in a session when becoming an SFC player. It is important that kids are able to handle this during the camps, as it helps us identify their potential.

“I was glad to see kids improving their skills, and it’s great that a few new faces from the camp have now joined our grassroots teams. Hard work pays off.

“Soccer is a highly competitive sport, and every minute on the field counts. We’re glad to have them with us and look forward to seeing them continue to work hard.”

The Summer Camp didn’t come without its challenges for the coaches, who adapted sessions to create worthwhile experiences for the vast range of participants, despite testing weather conditions.

“Many activities had to be adapted due to the extreme heat, with the kids spending nearly seven hours on the field each day. The fact that several kids chose to return for multiple weeks is a strong indication that they truly enjoyed the experience.

“We are very excited for next season as we resume team trainings to prepare for the Winter Leagues. The Saints Academy, our skill development program, is also returning to help players improve and potentially join our club’s competitive squads one day.”

Parents Perspective: Mark Spisic

SFC deeply values the importance of developing young players, and Mark Spisic shares his perspective of the opportunities his children are getting as part of the club.

With a constant stream of highly talented youngsters working their way up the age groups in Canada, Scrosoppi is always looking to improve both on and off the pitch to develop aspiring players.

Mark Spisic is a parent of two players at Scrosoppi – a son called Karlo in the 2011 Boys IModel program, and a daughter called Nina who featured in League1 Ontario’s League2 Division in the 2025 season.

Spisic is a former player himself, and has been a fan of the sport since his parents introduced him to soccer as a five-year-old. Now he has helped build a passion for soccer in the next generation.

Firstly, can you explain what’s involved in your children’s programs?

The program involves a multi-faceted approach to soccer, which includes highly trained and qualified coaches leading training sessions that aim to improve a player's individual skill level, soccer IQ and team culture.

Along with on-field practices and games, Scrosoppi infuses fitness training and education, video review classes and sports psychology sessions into the curriculum. The club also provides education and support for future high-level pathways, including university/college soccer and professional soccer leagues in Canada and beyond.

What progress have you seen in your children since starting at Scrosoppi?

Since starting at SFC, I have noticed vast improvements in my kids' speed of play, which includes quicker decision-making and quicker ball movement. I have also noticed a greater awareness of the style of play, formation and player responsibilities within those formations.

And what do they enjoy the most about being at Scrosoppi?

My children enjoy being challenged by the coaches to improve every time they step on the field. They also greatly value the sense of family that the club promotes from the grassroots through to the senior League1 Ontario programs.

I appreciate that my whole family is made to feel welcome at SFC, as well as the open communication lines with the coaches and managers.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for your children while at Scrosoppi?

I would like my children to become the best players they can be under the guidance of the SFC staff, and to see SFC promote them to higher levels of soccer if they deem that their talent level warrants advancement.

And what do you hope your children take away from their Scrosoppi experience as they get older?

I hope SFC can help to foster a strong work ethic, a sense of responsibility, and a lifelong love of soccer in my kids. In addition, I feel that my kids will take away positive and enduring relationships from their time here.

Top 10: League1 Ontario Graduates

With the Canadian Pro/Am game evolving year on year, we are taking a look at those who have gone on to achieve big in the sport.

In 2026, Scrosoppi will compete in the top men’s and women’s tiers of League1 Ontario – a competition that has seen more than 300 players sign for professional clubs in Canada or around the world.

To celebrate this platform, here are profiles on 10 players who have shone in the game since their summers playing Pro-Am soccer.

Olivia Smith

In 2022, Smith was scoring goals for North Toronto in the Women’s Premier Division, and now, she has kicked off her second Women’s Super League season in England following a record-breaking move to Arsenal.

The 21-year-old moved to Sporting Club in Portugal from Canada before sealing a transfer to Liverpool. After scoring seven league goals in the 2024/25 season, she completed a move to the Gunners for £1million, becoming the most expensive signing in women’s football history.

Tajan Buchanan

This electric winger is currently on the books at Villarreal in Spain following a $14.4million CAD move from Inter Milan – where he become the first-ever Canadian to score in Italy's top division, Serie A. Buchanan played for Sigma in League1 Ontario before getting a transfer to New England Revolution in 2019.

His move to Europe came in 2021 when he joined Club Brugge, and in the same year, he made the first of more than 50 appearances for the Canada Men’s National Team.

Vanessa Gilles

Gilles was Canada Soccer’s 2024 Women’s Player of the Year following a successful time at Olympique Lyon. The centre-back played for West Ottawa in League1 Ontario before stints at Apollon Limassol and Bordeaux.

She moved to Angel City in the US and was loaned out to Lyon for three years, where she won three league titles, a Coupe de France Féminine, and a Tropheé des Championnes. Her time at new club Bayern Munich began with a DFB-Supercup victory.

Alistair Johnston

Johnston has been playing his soccer for Celtic in Scotland since 2023, and has won three Premiership titles in 2022/23, 23/24, and 24/25. He started his senior career with Vaughan Azzurri and has also played for Nashville and CF Montréal. Other trophies to his name also include the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup, and he has made 17 UEFA Champions League appearances.

Alex Lamontagne

Another female player making her trade in France, Lamontagne has been playing for Saint-Étienne in the country’s top flight since 2023. Her previous club was Rodez AF, where she scored nine goals in 18 games to win promotion.

She played for Durham United (now Pickering) in League1 Ontario, and is now linking up with fellow Pro-Am soccer graduate Nikolina Istocki who recently signed for Saint-Étienne from NDC Ontario.

Cyle Larin

Larin scored four goals in five matches for Sigma in 2014, before continuing his scoring streak at Orlando City in the MLS. His European break came at Beşiktas in Turkey, where he scored 31 goals in 83 appearances to help the club to their league and cup double in 2021.

The forward is currently on the books for Mallorca in Spain where he made 67 league appearances, and was recently loaned to Feyenoord in the Netherlands' top division. He's also a leading figure in the Canadian Men's National Team with a solid goal-to-game ratio on the international stage.

Jade Rose

The young defender played for Unionville Milliken and NDC Ontario in League1 Ontario, in addition to developing her trade at Harvard University. She won the Women’s Premier Division with NDC in 2022, and signed for European giants Manchester City three years later.

Rose has been allocated the number four shirt in Manchester and is set to play a key part in her first professional campaign in the Women’s Super League, having already accumulated more than 30 appearances for the Canada Women’s National Team despite being just 22 years old.

Dayne St. Clair

Canada’s starting goalkeeper, the 28-year-old is the second Vaughan Azzurri graduate on this list and is currently between the sticks for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer. Last year he surpassed the 100-game mark in the USA's top flight, and its a number that has continued to rise this campaign.

His club efforts are in addition to his 16 appearances for his country, including a heavy presence in the CONCACAF Gold Cup this summer.

Victoria Pickett

Pickett started her senior career with Aurora in League1 Ontario, and after her college career, she signed for Kansas City Current in the National Women’s Soccer League in the USA.

She went on to play more than 70 times in the NWSL for three different teams, and has been enjoying a productive loan spell to AFC Toronto this year, where she has become one of the leading appearance-makers in the inaugural Northern Super League season.

Kamal Miller

Miller began his career at Vaughan Azzurri, and the most recent transfer for the 28-year-old defender was his move to Portland Timbers in 2024 where he has ran out more than 40 times in Major League Soccer.

He’s no stranger to the top flight in the States, having made 22 appearances at Inter Miami with Lionel Messi – where he lifted the Leagues Cup in 2023 – in addition to spells with Orlando City and CF Montréal.

Matias Cortes: An incredible learning experience

The former Scrosoppi youngster unpacks his time at the club that saw him gain playing opportunities in Portugal with SC Vianense.

Scrosoppi are continually looking to develop young players coming through, and 18-year-old midfielder Matias Cortes had a breakthrough season in Milton in 2024.

Cortes began his career at ProStars FC in 2015 and rose through the club’s ranks for eight years before making the move to Scrosoppi in 2023. He had a starring role in Scrosoppi’s Men’s League2 Division side in the following League1 Ontario campaign, and started one game in the Men’s Premier Division against his former club, as he shone as a player beyond his years.

His season earned him time at Scrosoppi’s partner club SC Vianense in Portugal, giving him valuable experience in a professional environment. He’s since returned to Canada and received regular minutes with Hamilton United in the League1 Ontario Men’s Championship – a level up from the League2 Division.

While finishing the 2025 season in different club colours, Cortes has fond memories from his experiences at Scrosoppi and shared withscrosoppifc.cahis highlights and ambitions.

Matias, how would you describe your experience at Scrosoppi?

My experience at Scrosoppi was really enjoyable. I had the chance to grow both as a player and a person while being part of a competitive and supportive environment. The team culture, coaching, and overall atmosphere made it a positive and memorable part of my journey.

The environment helped me stay motivated and focused, and I had the chance to train with quality coaches and teammates, and be in a place where I could keep developing and challenging myself every day.

Who at the club has helped to bring the best out of you, and how did they achieve that?

The people who brought the best out of me at Scrosoppi were the coaches I had the chance to work with; Bojan, John, Manny, and Uros. They consistently gave me opportunities to train and play wherever and whenever I was eligible, whether in the reserves or the men’s teams. That trust and belief pushed me to raise my level and stay ready for every opportunity.

How did being at Scrosoppi raise your standards, and prepare you for your first professional contract with SC Vianense?

The consistently high level of training and coaching, and the environment which was both demanding and supportive, pushed me to grow. I was also exposed to players who had already competed at high levels, and being around that kind of talent was a big driver in my own improvement. It showed me the standard I needed to aim for and helped me get there.

The main highlight of my time at Scrosoppi was the opportunity to gain exposure to SC Vianense in Portugal. Through the club, I was able to live abroad and experience soccer in a European environment, which was an incredible learning experience. I also had the chance to meet great people along the way and grow both on and off the field.

How do you think you have progressed as a player this year? Are you pleased with your development?

Yes, I’m definitely pleased with how I’ve progressed this year. On the field, I’ve developed as a player, becoming more confident and adaptable. Off the field, the experiences I’ve had, especially living abroad and playing with different teams, have helped me grow as a person. I learned a lot about myself, both in terms of how I handle challenges and how I carry myself in new environments.

After all that you’ve achieved on the field, what are the types of things you do off the field that help you prepare and stay energized for soccer?

To prepare for each gameday, I make sure to get a good night’s sleep the night before so I’m well-rested and ready to perform. Mentally, I spend time visualizing key moments and decisions I might face during the game to stay sharp and focused. A strong week of training leading up to the match also plays a big role in helping me feel confident and prepared when it’s time to step on the field.

I have a few interests beyond soccer that are really important to me. I enjoy watching movies, working out, and spending quality time with friends and family – it helps me stay balanced and recharged.

I’m also passionate about engineering and Formula 1. I’ve always been curious about how things work, and F1 combines that with the competitive spirit I love in sports. These interests give me a sense of purpose outside of soccer and help me stay well-rounded.

What advice do you have to young players like yourself who are aspiring to play high-level soccer at Scrosoppi and beyond?

My message to younger players is to always believe in yourself and trust your abilities. Stay confident, even when things get tough, and most importantly, love what you do. Passion and enjoyment will carry you through the challenges and help you keep pushing to reach your goals.

That’s great advice. What are your goals moving forward?

I want to stay ready and keep developing so when the opportunity comes, I can perform at my best.

Beyond this year, I aim to compete at higher levels of soccer while also focusing on my personal growth off the field, including my studies and career goals in engineering. Balancing both will help me become a stronger athlete and individual.

Scrosoppi win L1 Cup and finish as divisional runners-up

A 3-1 victory over four-time champions Vaughan Azzurri saw Scrosoppi lift their first Men's L1 Cup title, as the title fight in the Premier Division came down to the final games.

Silverware secured

Scrosoppi put on a clinical showing in front of goal when it mattered most, with Miles Green and Luka Juricic showing no mercy as both found the net to help Scrosoppi win the Men’s L1 Cup Final for the first time.

Green opened the scoring before setting up his fellow attacker to double the lead just after half-time. Juricic claimed his second of the game late in injury time after Marco Sciortini’s goal for Vaughan set up a tense ending.

The story of the final

Vaughan goalkeeper Alessio Carbone was called into an early save after Green’s free-kick in the 11th minute was whipped in with pace and caused havoc in the box. Carbone’s save ricocheted off his own defender and had to be cleared off the line as Scrosoppi almost took the lead.

The deadlock was broken moments later when Green, who was finding a lot of space and success on the wing, got in behind from Omari Cotterell’s pass. The winger assessed the options in the box before his cross seemed to take a deflection and loop high over the goalkeeper and into the net to give Scrosoppi a perfect start.

Green’s goal was the only one of the game before the break, but it was almost two early in the second half with Joshua Parades hitting the target with a powerful half-volley. Carbone pushed the shot away into the path of Orlendis Benitez Hernandez, but he could only head over the bar.

Scrosoppi crucially doubled their lead seven minutes into the second half, with Green looking dangerous in the attacking third again. He found more space in the box and pulled the ball back for Juricic, who calmly put a neat finish past the goalkeeper to score his first of two.

After chances went awry for Nathaniel Susnik and Juricic to score a third, Vaughan scored a goal of their own as comeback hopes were restored with fresh legs. Substitute Nick Spittle broke down the right wing and squared the ball for fellow sub Sciortino for a tap-in.

Vaughan were soon close to levelling as Scrosoppi were saved by the crossbar. Kayden Dugas found some space down the right, and his cross fell to James Fidalgo, who set himself in the box and smashed the ball against the frame of the goal.

As the game approached its conclusion and hung in the balance, it was Scrosoppi who struck in injury time to deal the final blow. Elton Nyumah won a header in midfield and released Juricic, who slipped Skublak through on goal and rounded the goalkeeper before unselfishly squaring the ball back to his teammate to slot into an open net and seal the victory.

Close, but just out of reach

The closing stages of the regular season also saw a dramatic conclusion to the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division, as Scrosoppi finished second behind Woodbridge Strikers. Only two points separated the sides by the end of the title fight, with SFC mounting a competitive title defence.

John Yacou’s team were a force to be reckoned with again in the league this season, winning 12 matches and finishing as the division’s highest scorers. After securing their first title in 2024, the team rose to the challenge of being the side to beat.

The season started in perfect fashion after beating Simcoe County Rovers 1-0, before St. Francis Xavier saw its first home win of the year with a 2-0 victory over Sigma. A couple of difficult results against Vaughan Azzurri and title hopefuls Alliance United meant the side had to regroup at the end of June.

Scrosoppi's clinical finishing throughout the season put the team in early title contention, with Tomasz Skublak returning to continue his form from 2024, alongside 2025 signings Orlendis Benitez Hernandez and Augustus Oku who made a big impression.

Woodbridge and Alliance United looked strong throughout, but it was a two-horse race as the season raced to its climax, with Scrosoppi and Woodbridge going toe-to-toe. Scrosoppi beat their title rivals 4-3 in their penultimate match, and won 8-0 in their last game against North Toronto, doing their bit to pile the pressure on the long-time league leaders.

Scrosoppi were left waiting in the final matchweek after Woodbridge’s fixture against FC London was postponed due to weather. The Strikers required victory in the rescheduled match, and a 3-0 win at FC London was enough for them to finish in first.

While it wasn’t to be in the Men’s Premier this year, Scrosoppi’s Men’s L1 Cup title and promotion from the Women’s Championship has made for another memorable, and successful, season.

Scrosoppi’s men prepare for cup final

This Wednesday, August 20, sees Scrosoppi face current title holders Vaughan Azzurri with a chance of claiming L1 Cup silverware.

Scrosoppi could secure a league and cup double this week in League1 Ontario, adding to the success of the women’s side who won the Championship this season.

First up for John Yacou’s men’s side is the L1 Cup Final, where defending champions Vaughan Azzurri are looking to retain their crown this season after an impressive run in 2024 saw them lift the trophy for the fourth time.

Then focus switches to the last matchweek of the Men’s Premier Division, where a win for Scrosoppi against North Toronto, and defeat for Woodbridge Strikers against FC London, would see Scrosoppi retain their regular-season crown.

Searching for success

Scrosoppi and Vaughan have had differing fortunes in the Men’s Premier this season, with Scrosoppi looking to defend their title while their opponents (and three-time divisional champions) sit in seventh.

While this is the first L1 Cup Final for SFC, they are no strangers to big games after appearing in the TELUS Canadian Championship back in April and the Men’s Premier Final against Simcoe County Rovers back in 2023.

Scrosoppi’s Men’s L1 Cup semifinal this year was also against Simcoe, and Yacou’s team came through on penalties after a 1-1 tie in the 90. They also beat North Toronto in a shootout in the quarterfinals after three goals apiece in normal time, and after a 3-0 win against Windsor in the Round Two.

Vaughan Azzurri have looked convincing in their cup run, with victories against Oakville and Burlington, and an impressive 2-0 win against league leaders Woodbridge Strikers in the semifinals.

Scrosoppi’s opponents have held the upper hand in the league this year, winning 2-1 at St. Francis Xavier and holding on to a 0-0 tie in the reverse fixture. A 3-1 win on penalties in the final against Simcoe last season has Azzurri heading into this fixture with the aim of defending their crown.

Key matchups

If the matches leading up to this one are anything to go by, then this should be a tight and tense affair, with some key battles all over the field.

Miles Green is Scrosoppi’s joint-top scorer in the Men's L1 Cup this season with two goals, tied with Deryn Armstrong who scored a brace against Windsor, and Vaughan Azzurri’s Chris Campoli is level with them.

Green crucially found the net against Simcoe and North Toronto in the cup and also added two goals in the regular season. He could lineup against 2024 Men’s Premier MVP Tomasz Skublak who has been firing again for Scrosoppi this year with nine goals in the league.

But Azzurri’s defence will be tough to break down, with only four sides conceding less at this stage in the regular season. Mathieu Laurent is an effective piece of their back line, helping with several clean sheets and finding the net twice in the league.

Other key cogs for Vaughan are midfielders Jacob Begley and Raheem Rose, and forward Ryan Robinson, who Scrosoppi’s defenders will need to shut down in order to claim the crown.

Scrosoppi promoted following Women’s Championship title

John Yacou’s side secured promotion to the Women’s Premier on August 3 by winning the Championship in their second season. Let's take a look back at what got them there.

Final day trophy lift

Following a tight and tense promotion battle throughout 2025, Scrosoppi claimed their spot in the top tier of League1 Ontario’s women’s competition for next season with a 2-1 win at Pickering. Victory on the final day moved SFC onto 30 points, securing top spot ahead of Hamilton United who finished with 29.

It was the home side who took the lead in Sunday's match, with Pickering’s Hollie Babut making it 1-0 deep into first-half injury time. Scrosoppi fought back, though, with Aalayah Lully equalizing six minutes later and before the break.

The sides were level for the majority of the second 45, but with four minutes remaining in the match, Yasmin Castillo scored the goal to seal the all-important points.

After defeat in last year’s Pro/Rel Playoff confirmed another season in the Championship, Scrosoppi ended the 2025 campaign with nine victories from 16 matches, and the second-most goals scored across the division.

Finding their feet

The season could not have started much worse for Scrosoppi, as they were beaten 4-0 in the Women’s L1 Cup at home to Pickering. Serena McDonald’s hat-trick for the away side meant Scrosoppi had their full focus on the regular season from the start, and a 3-0 win against Rush Canada Academy on the opening day quickly put the cup defeat behind them.

A difficult few weeks approached with defeats at Oakville and Whitby, but victories over Unionville Milliken and Burlington in May had them challenging in the top four early on. June was an important month for the team, with three wins from four games, including a 4-2 victory against Pickering which saw Jahkaya Davis score a hat-trick.

The good form continued until the end of the season, with just one loss throughout July and August. A 4-1 win against promotion-hopefuls Tecumseh United was another match to remember, with Castillo and Davis scoring again, and Natalie Moynihan and Julia Bullock also finding the back of the net.

A super strike partnership

Jahkaya Davis and Yasmin Castillo were two of the team’s most important players in 2025, both scoring an impressive eight goals each during the season. Rush Canada Academy ‘s Caitlyn Gratton led the way in the division’s stats with 11, but the SFC pair finished second and third in the rankings.

Davis’ second season in the Women’s Championship was an impressive one, with goals against Burlington, Tecumseh United, Rush Canada Academy, Pickering, and Unionville Milliken helping to secure promotion.

Castillo was equally as sublime in front of goal, with her five goals in four games throughout June and July helping to propel the team into the top two. Scrosoppi’s defence was also one to be proud of, with 18 conceded in 16 games.

More silverware on the horizon?

With the first-place finish, there is no Pro/Rel Playoff for the women’s team this year. Instead, the club looks ahead to strengthening the squad for their debut campaign in the Women’s Premier – a competition that had a lot of quality on show in 2025.

But for the men’s team, this season is far from over. They are hunting their second Men’s Premier title and preparing for their L1 Cup Final against Vaughan Azzurri later this month, following a penalty shootout victory against Simcoe County Rovers on Wednesday.

Joshua Paredes: Preparation and motivation

The League1 Ontario veteran midfielder discusses how he continues to seek high standards on and off the pitch.

Since his move to Scrosoppi in 2023, Joshua Paredes has experienced both the highs and lows of Canadian soccer, while maintaining consistent performances from the heart of John Yacou’s midfield.

The 32-year-old began his playing career at Humber College, before moving to Toronto FC’s academy, and ending up in League1 Ontario with Woodbridge Strikers. He then made his move to divisional rivals Scrosoppi and his since won the Men’s Premier title and played in the TELUS Canadian Championship.

Now, he is once again fighting for Premier Division success and to top the League1 Ontario standings for the third year in a row, while progressing from the semifinals of the Men’s L1 Cup.

Joshua, what are your main highlights from your time at Scrosoppi so far?

Bouncing back from finishing first place in 2023 and losing in the final, to winning the league again and achieving Canadian Championship qualification. The club is a professional environment that holds players and coaches to high standards while still fostering a family environment.

Which person from Scrosoppi has helped to bring the best out of you, and why?

John Yacou, and coaching staff. John has been an influence by leading the team by example – showing his work ethic on and off the pitch in his role.

Most importantly, he’s a human like all of us, and cares about his players. He takes time to understand us, but he doesn’t allow that to waiver on high standards and expectations for players.

How do you prepare for matches to maintain that high standard of commitment?

There’s rest and calmness on the gameday. Light meals, relaxed vibes and energy, and light movement to get my body ready, but the most important thing I do is ensure I’m thinking about individual and team performance and lowering the pressure to ensure I don’t overthink.

I’m always preparing physically, seven days a week, to be ready for gamedays. I am grateful to continue to perform physically and mentally at a high level, and I’m hoping to continue to perform and get the team at the top of the table where we belong.

What keeps you occupied off the field?

Coaching, and my kids. I have two sons that I strive to set a positive example for day in and day out and they are early in their soccer careers. It’s why I continue to push myself to play, to inspire them and give them memories, and hope they follow suit with their actions.

As someone who has plenty of experience in the game, what’s your message to younger Scrosoppi players?

Scrosoppi should be a stepping stone for players going to the next level, but players should also approach the stepping stone with the right mentality and professionalism. If opportunity arises, you don’t want to sell yourself short.

Any player aspiring to be a professional needs to control their approach to ensure they have good habits. Don’t take it for granted because habits are formed during the journey.

Male U20 players wanted for fall season

The fall season of League1 Ontario's Men's U20 League is quickly approaching, and Scrosoppi are recruiting players to build a competitive roster.

Scrosoppi are looking for 2006-2008 players for the League1 Ontario Men's U20 League fall season.

Players interested should contact Shayne Griffin at shayne@scrosoppi.ca to secure their trial opportunity. The next trials event is 7:30pm-9pm on Tuesday, August 5 at St Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School (1145 Bronte St S, Milton).

Griffin, who is Scrosoppi's Executive Director, said: "The U20 League provides opportunities for our club and staff to potentially be exposed to new, untapped talent. We are aiming to fill a competitive roster for the fall season, and male players born 2008 or earlier have the opportunity to play in this high-performance competition."

Scrosoppi’s men’s first team are heading into the last four of the L1 Cup following a dramatic win on penalties against North Toronto, and continue their title fight in the Premier Division.

Ruthless from the spot

Wednesday, July 16 saw Scrosoppi reach the semifinals of the L1 Cup for the first time. Following an entertaining 3-3 tie with North Toronto under the lights at St Francis Xavier, which saw Paiman Sultani, Miles Green, and Mashhood Rehman score, a 6-5 victory on penalties set up a clash with Simcoe County Rovers.

It was the visitors who took an early lead through Cyrus Rollocks, but three first-half goals put SFC into a 3-1 lead at half-time. Rollocks scored his second three minutes into the second half, and the game looked to be ending 3-2, but Bilal Abou Reslan ensured it was going all the way.

Both sides looked comfortable from the spot, with Green finding the net again, alongside Matteo Cotrone, Javier George, Pau Sanchis, Faris Ammari, and Lucas Spinosa. In sudden death, though, North Toronto’s Sufyan Fraj failed to find the net, sending the home side into the next round.

Looking for revenge

With Simcoe County Rovers in the next round, Scrosoppi will be searching for a statement win against an opponent with whom they have plenty of recent history. Both sides still compete in the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division, but SFC fans will remember the 2023 playoff final, which ended in a 4-2 defeat.

The two sides currently sit side-by-side in the top tier, level on points, with the Rovers having played two extra games. This fixture was the opening game of the season, with Scrosoppi taking the points in a 1-0 win at J.C. Massie Field. They faced off again on July 5, with the game ending level after an entertaining 3-3 tie.

Simcoe finished fifth in the league in 2024, as SFC won their first league title. The former enjoyed more success in the L1 Cup last year, however, reaching the final. They were eventually defeated on penalties by Vaughan Azzurri, so they are aiming to go one step further in 2025.

Aiming for two in a row

Away from the L1 Cup, tensions are rising in the Men’s Premier Division title race. Woodbridge Strikers currently hold top spot, three points ahead of Alliance United in second, and four points ahead of Scrosoppi, who are third.

With six games left, Scrosoppi will need to adapt to be the chasing side rather than the leaders that they were last season, and a crunch match against Woodbridge on August 16 is set to be the headline fixture. They head straight back into regular-season action this Saturday, hosting a Burlington side who are just outside the top four.

Searching for silverware

Scrosoppi’s women are also well in the hunt for a division title, currently sitting second in the L1ON Women’s Championship. The first-place team is automatically promoted from the second tier, and a win this weekend against Hamilton United would send SFC to the summit with two games remaining.

Following a second-place finish in 2024 and qualifying for the Pro/Rel Playoffs, a 3-1 defeat to North Mississauga meant SFC had to go again in the second tier this year. Heading into the final three games of 2025, the goal is to take the next step and earn a deserved promotion.

In League2, Scrosoppi are still enjoying life in the Women’s Northeast Conference. They currently sit third in the standings after 11 games and have a strong chance to reach the playoffs; they are two points behind and with two games in hand on Alliance United who are second.

The Men’s League2 team are currently sixth in the Central Conference after three narrow defeats, and have one game left this season against Burlington on July 22.

Marcus Channer: Scrosoppi is a family

The midfielder discusses his time at SFC, his transition into the professional game in Portugal, and advice for aspiring players.

Marcus Channer has just spent a season with SC Vianense – Scrosoppi’s professional partner club in Portugal – following a successful two years playing in League1 Ontario.

A pivotal player in the club’s 2024 League1 Ontario title win, he already has plenty of experience in the game and is now looking to continue to make his mark in the professional leagues.

The 23-year-old began his career at Mount Hamilton before spending five years at Hamilton Sparta, and another four years at Oakville. He has also played for Burlington in the Ontario Player Development League, Team Ontario, Erin Mills, and McMaster University, before moving to Europe to play for FK Babrungas in Lithuania, and CD Huétor Tájar in Spain.

He then returned to Canada, where his performances playing for Scrosoppi earned him starts for Vianense in the Portuguese Liga 3.

Firstly, how would you describe your experience at Scrosoppi?

It was one of my best footballing experiences. I consider the club to be my second home and a place where I have made many close friends. It is filled with great people from top to bottom, and I couldn’t be any more grateful for everything they have done for me.

The training is always at a high level and has a standard of competition that demands the absolute best from everyone at all times. If there were ever a chance for a League1 Ontario team to become a professional club, Scrosoppi would top that list.

What was it like being crowned a League1 Ontario champion in 2024, and who were the people who helped you along the way?

The League1 season is long and taxing, and to be able to lift the trophy alongside the people who worked and fought alongside me every day made everything worth it.

John Yacou [head coach] constantly demands the best from everyone. He’s an excellent coach and understands the importance of getting everyone to buy into the project. His knowledge of the game is top level, and the proof is in his track record, which speaks for itself. His winning mentality is contagious and reflective in results. Johnny Stancati was the team manager behind the scenes and wasn't afraid to tell it like it is.

Gary and Sara Raulino are true enthusiasts of the sport and what every League1 club should have in terms of ownership. They have brought opportunities to a number of players and work extremely hard to create pathways for Canadian footballers, which is something that this country is in dire need of. I’ve only known them for a short amount of time, and to be honest, I was shocked by how much they cared about me and my career.

How did playing for Scrosoppi equip you to play at higher levels?

First, the training is at the level of and above other professional clubs I’ve played for. The structure and intensity of the sessions are at a professional level, and combining that with the players, most of whom have also played professionally at some point, created an environment that definitely prepared me for higher levels.

My transition to SC Vianense wasn’t as difficult as some may think because of this.

How have you progressed on and off the field this year, and are you pleased with what you've achieved?

I have definitely progressed on the field. The level of training was next to none, so that goes without saying.

Off the field, I feel as if I’ve come to realize the importance of living in the moment and enjoying the highs and not revelling in the lows. This is in regard to not only soccer but everything else in life.

I am extremely pleased with what I’ve been able to achieve, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the people at Scrosoppi from top to bottom. This is a family.

Let's look ahead to the future; what are your targets for this year, and beyond?

My target for this year is to remain the course, return overseas – wherever that may be – and continue to prove why I deserve to play at higher levels. I am confident that I will be able to achieve this and leverage my career to its full potential.

What’s your message to younger players aspiring to play high-level soccer at Scrosoppi and beyond?

If this is something you truly want to do, you have to put in the work. It’s that simple. Of course, it is very important that you show up to team training and give your best, but in all honesty, it’s not enough.

You have to be doing things on your own. If all you’re doing is showing up to train with your team, you’re giving everyone else the opportunity to progress at the same level as you are. Give yourself the advantage, go to the field on your own, go to a trainer, do whatever it is that you can to make yourself a better player every single day and separate yourself from the rest.

You have to be willing to sacrifice your time and energy, but it does pay off. Every player that I know who is playing at a professional level has sacrificed in this manner to some extent. If this is something you want to do, it has to become your life, not just a hobby.

Parents Perspective: Nancy Radwan discusses the SFC academy

Mother of two Nancy Radwan talks about confidence building, strengthening teamwork, and the excitement of gamedays in our Parents Perspective feature.

Nancy Radwan grew up in a soccer family, so when her two children Zein and Zakariya showed interest in playing the game, it was natural for her to support them in their journey.

Zein and Zakariya are part of the U14 and U11 teams in the Scrosoppi academy, respectively, and we spoke to Nancy about how things are progressing.

Firstly, what made Zein and Zakariya want to join Scrosoppi?

It was the excitement of being part of a team and playing with friends. But over time, they grew to love the game itself.

As parents we wanted them to stay active, build confidence, and learn the value of teamwork in a fun and structured environment. Soccer offered a great balance of physical exercise and social interaction, and I knew it would help them develop discipline, resilience, and leadership skills over time.

Have you seen them progress in these aspects since starting at Scrosoppi?

I’ve seen great progress – not just in their soccer skills, but in their overall confidence and discipline. Technically, they’ve become more comfortable on the ball, more aware of the game, and better at making quick decisions under pressure.

What’s involved in the program to have this type of impact?

The program involves regular practices focused on developing players’ skills. It also includes physical fitness training, teamwork activities, and opportunities to apply what they learn through games.

What do Zein and Zakariya enjoy the most?

The excitement of gamedays, the bond with their team, and the feeling of progress after a tough practice. The club has become a place where they feel proud, focused, and inspired.

And as a parent, what are the things you value about Scrosoppi?

The coaching staff is dedicated, knowledgeable, and truly invested in helping each player grow to their full potential. I also appreciate the club’s structured approach, high standards, and positive environment. There’s a strong focus on teamwork, discipline, and respect.

What are your aspirations for your children while at Scrosoppi?

I want them to enjoy the journey – to build lasting friendships, learn the value of teamwork, and develop a strong work ethic that carries into all areas of life. Whether they pursue soccer competitively or recreationally in the future, I hope their time at Scrosoppi helps shape them into well-rounded, motivated, and respectful individuals.

I hope they remember the relationships they built, the challenges they overcame, and the confidence they gained through hard work and dedication.

Coach Catch-Up: Luis Domingos on his first season in competitive women’s soccer

The Women’s League2 Division and academy coach reflects on his last few months at Scrosoppi.

Luis Domingos has been with Scrosoppi for the past three years and currently coaches across a variety of age groups.

He is part of the staff in the women’s second team which competes in the Women’s League2 Division – the third tier of League1 Ontario – and he also coaches in the Scrosoppi academy.

Domingos is incredibly passionate about soccer, and coaching was his way to continue his involvement in the game after hanging up his cleats. We caught up with him midway through the Women’s League2 season, and his first campaign as a coach in competitive women’s soccer.

Luis, looking back over the last two months, what’s been your main highlight?

Seeing things that we work on in practice happening in games, and helping us collect good results, is very satisfying. The team is performing well and it gives us confidence to continue the process.

On the academy side, it’s definitely growing and we are excited to see new faces joining the club in the next few months, so we can keep our team and club strong.

The Women’s League2 team has four wins from seven so far this season, which is a strong foundation to build from. What have you been working on at training the most?

Lots of exercises that help us to be safe when playing out from that back, and also how to effectively attack the spaces the opponent offers.

Why is competitive soccer important in the local community?

Competitive soccer provides an environment for mental toughness and skill development. It exposes players and coaches to pressure, demands quick and smart decisions, and people become stronger in the process.

Let’s talk about some players; who has stood out for you in the last two months?

I could mention Sanai Sereboe, a 2008 girl that is already impacting the Women’s Championship team when given a chance. She has improved a lot and now understands her individual tactics better, which has helped her impact games.

I am also really happy to see Gabrielle Caserta playing at a very good level after a serious injury that kept her away from the field for so long.

What is your current message to your players?

Be resilient. This game is made of ups and downs, so stay strong when things do not go your way.

Why should people come and support your team on a gameday?

People will see a team that is a reflection of our club: passionate and dedicated people that fight until the end to be better day after day.

Scrosoppi FC has given me the opportunity to show what I can do and I try to do the same with my players. I carry with me values and beliefs that I think are important and I do my best to teach them to the players.

Castillo finds shooting boots as Scrosoppi race to Championship summit

Yasmin Castillo answers some key questions about her progress, playing for Scrosoppi, and the current League1 Ontario campaign.

Yasmin Castillo is one of Scrosoppi’s in-form players in the League1 Ontario Women’s Championship, having scored three goals in her last four matches to help SFC to the top of the standings.

Her side have won five matches out of nine in the 2025 regular season, including three from the last four. The recent run of results means they now have a one-point lead in the table, ahead of Pickering, who SFC beat 4-2 on Saturday.

Despite Pickering going ahead, Castillo’s penalty opened Scrosoppi’s account and Jahkaya Davis scored an impressive hat-trick to put the points beyond doubt.

The winners of the Women’s Championship not only earn silverware, but gain automatic promotion to the Women’s Premier Division – the top tier of the League1 Ontario pyramid.

SFC finished second in the Championship last year and qualified for a Pro/Rel Playoff with the Premier’s North Mississauga, but the Panthers stopped Scrosoppi going up in their inaugural women’s season with a 3-1 win.

Castillo, who played with Milton Magic for 11 years as a youngster, played more than 1,000 minutes for Scrosoppi last year. The midfielder then joined the University of New Brunswick, and after her rookie season, is now back with SFC making a big impact as we approach the final seven matches of the campaign.

With Scrosoppi leading the league ahead of the most important time in the season, what are your thoughts on the upcoming games?

These next few games are crucial for us. Every game will be tough as the competition is tight across the Championship Division teams. We are looking to capitalize on matchups where we know we are stronger as a team, and staying focused on earning three points game by game.

How pleased are you with your progress so far this year?

Although this year we weren’t able to train together over the winter due to university commitments, our chemistry is quickly returning and we are coming together nicely. We’re focused on fine-tuning a few areas.

As a team, my goal is for us to advance to the Premier Division of League1 Ontario this year and compete at the highest level. On a personal level, I’m aiming for a successful season where I can make a meaningful impact and establish myself as a key player for my university team.

Talking of making an impact, what influence has John Yacou had on your progress and the rise to the Women’s Championship summit?

He constantly pushes me and my teammates to bring out the best in ourselves, both individually and as a group. His intensity and winning mindset set the tone for everything we do and he holds us to a high standard and expects us to compete every day, but at the same time, he genuinely cares about his players and wants the best for each of us. He’s also helped me grow as a leader, both on and off the pitch.

Is there anyone else who has played an important part in your journey?

Although soccer is at the centre of my life, spending time with friends and family is just as important to me. It’s something I’ve come to value even more, especially since I only get to be with them for a few months in the year. Their constant support means a lot to me and has helped me immensely in my journey.

You’ve been with Scrosoppi for two years now. What’s your experience been like?

My time at Scrosoppi over the past two years has been unmatched. Since I joined, my team has become family to me, and I look forward to each practice.

One of the standout moments from my time at Scrosoppi was our very first game together as a team. We faced Burlington in the opening round of the L1 Cup; it was a home game, first time in front of our fans, and we were excited and ready to play.

How do you get yourself ready for kick-off on matchdays?

On gamedays, no matter the kick-off time, my day is blocked off. I try to carb-load hours before our game and when we arrive, I get the music going right away. The best preparation is relaxing in the change room with music blasting and my teammates around. As soon as I am taped up, I also like to go on a pregame walk on the field with some of the girls just to relax and focus.

You have played soccer in Milton since you were very young. What’s your message to local players looking to play high-level soccer?

Hard work beats talent. The small detail that may not seem important when you're young become crucial once you grow up and develop into a player.

Alexia Rhooms: Never give up on your dreams

The midfielder is back in Canada following a professional spell in Portugal, and is looking to inspire others as she pursues her next opportunities as a player and coach.

After playing and coaching at Scrosoppi, Alexia Rhooms relocated across the Atlantic at the start of the year to become a professional soccer player for Vilaverdense.

The club competes in the top division of the women’s game in Portugal – Liga BPI – and Rhooms relied on her experience in League1 Ontario and university soccer to push her limits in the new environment.

In the Pro-Am game, which was Canada’s highest level of women’s soccer before the creation of the Northern Super League, she starred for Oakville Blue Devils and Burlington ahead of signing for Scrosoppi.

The Toronto Metropolitan University graduate has now returned to Canada and is ready for her next opportunity.

Alexia, welcome back to Canada; what are you doing now that you are back on home soil?

I currently coach young girls and absolutely love it; it’s rewarding to help them grow both as players and as people. It’s important to me because I want to give back to the game that’s given me so much and continue to inspire the next generation of players.

Now that you’ve had the experience of playing top-division soccer, what are your next goals?

My main goal this year is to return to playing overseas, signing with a new team and continuing to grow in a professional environment. The level was intense, and it took time to adjust, but being pushed like that helped me grow both on and off the field and I’m truly grateful for that. It challenged me to elevate my game, stay disciplined, and keep working.

I also want to keep coaching during the off-season. It’s something that keeps me grounded and truly feels like a piece of my heart.

How do you think playing for Scrosoppi helped equip you to play at a higher level?

From the very beginning, the club created an environment that pushed me to grow – not just as a player, but as a leader, a coach, and a role model. It gave me the confidence, structure, and support I needed to believe in myself again, and for that, I’ll always be grateful.

Coming back from three ACL injuries over the years has been one of the toughest challenges of my career – especially mentally. My first season at Scrosoppi became a turning point, and I made a promise to myself that I would push harder than ever, and I did. Whether that meant arriving early or staying late after training with teammates to get in the extra work, I committed fully.

Could you name someone from Scrosoppi who helped bring the best out of you during that time?

My best friend and teammate, Sahara Zingano. After finishing our university careers, we made the decision to play one more summer together before going overseas – and that decision ended up making my summer unforgettable.

Sahara and I trained together every single day, and she brings out the best in me, not just as a player, but as a person. On the hard days, when I was struggling mentally or not performing the way I wanted to, she was always the one person I could turn to. Her presence made it easier to reset and take on the next day with strength and confidence. I can’t wait to see her play for Barcelona one day, and support her every step of the way.

Keeping in mind all the challenges you overcame, what was the moment like when you became a professional player?

All of that hard work, that persistence and belief, came full circle when I got the call that I was heading overseas to play professionally. That moment was everything. The staff at Scrosoppi supported me from day one and always knew what my goals were. To have a club stand behind me like that – it made the achievement that much more meaningful.

And now you are the one standing behind young players. What’s it like coaching a new generation of players in the Scrosoppi academy?

One of the most rewarding parts of my time here has been the chance to coach while playing. I absolutely love working with the young girls in the academy. Seeing them at Scrosoppi games, cheering us on with the same energy and heart they bring to their own practices, is incredibly fulfilling.

Do you have any particular goals you would like to achieve as a coach?

One of my goals is to coach at the university level one day, and I also want to get involved in mentorship for young athletes. Helping them navigate their own pathways and being a support system – especially for girls in sport – is something I’m really passionate about. I’ve had incredible people help me along my journey, and I want to be that person for others.

Do you have a key message to some of those academy players and young sports people looking to progress to higher levels?

My message to younger players is to never give up on your dreams. Your journey is your own, no one else’s. Protect it, believe in it, and pour everything you have into it. There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt, but if you stay true to yourself and remember why you started, you’ll find your way.

Scouting opportunities for local players through OPSM ID Camp

Scrosoppi GM Sara Raulino looks ahead to this weekend’s OPSM ID Camp in Milton, and outlines why local players should sign up.

Scrosoppi are hosting an ID Camp across Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8 to provide local soccer players with opportunities to progress to the next level.

The event is being hosted in collaboration with OPSM Soccer – a platform that promotes upcoming stars of the game. Players at the event will have the opportunity to train with overseas coaches and showcase their talents in front of soccer staff from universities and professional clubs.

OPSM will provide footage for each player in attendance, as well as feedback and insight that could help them progress in the game.

This is the first time Scrosoppi have hosted an event with OPSM. Players aged 14 and above will be able to sign up and attend, with the girls’ camp on the Saturday and the boys’ event on the Sunday.

Manveer Gill: Everyone is committed to building something special

The midfielder discusses his time at Scrosoppi, aspirations, and advice to young players in our latest Q/A.

This year is Manveer Gill’s third campaign as a key part of Scrosoppi’s League1 Ontario men’s team, and he had already registered 17 appearances and more than 1,300 minutes in back-to-back regular seasons.

Gill joined John Yacou’s ranks in 2023 after coming back from a long injury, and he quickly found his feet in the starting lineup to help Scrosoppi qualify for the Men’s Premier Division ahead of League1 Ontario’s reformat to three tiers.

The 26-year-old midfielder has been playing since U10 level with Brampton Youth, before having youth spells with Mississauga Falcons, North Mississauga, and Woodbridge Strikers. He went on to play for Guelph University and League1 Ontario’s Oakville Blue Devils, and more recently starred for York University after his return to the field.

Manveer, how did your move to Scrosoppi come about?

I heard John was coaching and we have some previous experience with one another, as he coached me when I played for North Mississauga. I had always appreciated John’s approach to coaching and his values for soccer aligned with mine.

It is really important to have a coach who understands you, and John is that type of coach. He understands my desire to constantly better myself and my love for this sport. He often feels more like a big brother to me.

How would you describe your experience with the club so far?

From the minute I started playing at Scrosoppi, I knew it was going to be a successful club. The standards held by the club can be seen in all aspects, from frequent training sessions with great coaches to a very involved management team. It always feels as though everyone has your best interest in mind, and they are always striving to help you grow. It feels like family.

On top of having created such a great environment for its players, our success the past two years really showcases the mindset here at Scrosoppi. Everyone is committed to building something special here and that’s how I would describe my experience: as something special.

You’ve achieved a lot since joining the club; what are some of your highlights?

I have been blessed to have experienced many great moments. If I had to narrow it down to just one, it would easily be getting the chance to play in the [TELUS] Canadian Championship. Not only was it a big game for me, but it was also Scrosoppi’s debut in the competition, and I felt proud to be able to experience that opportunity with this club.

Although the outcome was not in our favour, it was a great learning opportunity and it will only push us to work harder to get there again next year.

The Canadian Championship was certainly a big occasion. For younger people reading, how do you prepare yourself to be on top form for matchdays?

Preparation for gameday starts the night before. This includes having a nutritious dinner and getting a good night’s sleep; I want to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.

My meals for gameday are dependent on what time kick-off is; typically I have my largest meal five to six hours before kick-off and then some snacks a few hours before. Besides that, my routine is fairly simple – relaxed activities such as watching soccer games or going for a walk. A few hours before, I start visualizing the game and what I have to do on the field to be successful. In the final 10 minutes before heading out, I take time to myself and practice mindfulness to help with the anticipation of playing; this helps quiet my mind and get tuned in for the game.

What other advice would you give to young players aspiring to play high-level soccer at Scrosoppi?

Embrace the process as much as possible. Often, we get so caught up in reaching a certain level that we forget to take time and recognize the present moment, so go into every practice and game eager. Eager to learn, eager to play, eager to be better.

Don’t forget what made you want to play at the higher level, and always take time to appreciate how far you’ve come while still striving to move forward. Also, make sure you believe in yourself. Everyone else’s opinion comes second to how you feel about yourself, and if you believe you can, there is not a single thing that can stop you from achieving your dreams.

Talking of dreams, what are your aspirations for this year?

On the field, the goal is always to win the league and make it back to the Canadian Championship next year. Off the field, I would love to assist with the growth of the club, and be a part of the reason Scrosoppi continues to be successful and reach newer heights.

Something new to me this year is the responsibility of taking a leadership role. As one of the older guys on the team, it is my responsibility to set the standard for the younger guys and assist with their growth as well. I look forward to continuing this role as we progress through the season.

Two late goals hand Scrosoppi important points in League1 Ontario

Kyrese Lynch-Bailey and Sanai Sereboe were the heroes for Scrosoppi in the latest League1 Ontario matchweek as SFC claimed maximum points.

On Sunday, Scrosoppi bagged their third win in four League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division matches to climb to third in the standings. John Yacou’s side were deadlocked with promoted side FC London, but substitute Kyrese Lynch-Bailey tapped home Orlendis Benitez-Hernandez’s pass to give SFC the lead with just two minutes of regular time remaining.

It was another late goal that won three points for SFC in the Women’s Championship on Sunday. After SFC striker Jahkaya Davis had opened the scoring in the seventh minute, the visiting Unionville Milliken levelled five minutes later.

The match stayed 1-1 until Sanai Sereboe scored in the 82nd minute, and SFC protected the advantage in the final few stages to bank their second win of the season.

Next up

Scrosoppi’s men were set to play in the Men's L1 Cup on Thursday night when they host Windsor City from the Men’s Championship, but this match has been postponed (updated 1pm ET). The eventual winner of this tie will go on to face either North Toronto or St Catharines Roma Wolves who play their Round Two head-to-head next Wednesday.

The men are next in divisional action on Sunday, June 1 when they take on Woodbridge Strikers, who thumped North Toronto in the latest matchweek and will be a stern test for Yacou’s reliable defence.

There’s Women’s Championship action this Friday, however, with SFC visiting an unbeaten Tecumseh United side who have dropped just two points since the start of the 2025 regular season.

League2 round-up

Scrosoppi have won three Women’s League2 matches on the bounce, including a big 5-1 victory against Unionville Milliken, and are still unbeaten this season. Their game against Woodbridge Strikers was postponed last night, and Master’s FA are their next opponents on Wednesday, May 28.

Scrosoppi tied 3-3 with Woodbridge Strikers in the Men’s League2 Division on May 9, with Michael Crocco on the scoresheet once again for the second team. They next play Sigma on Friday, May 22.

Building momentum in League1 Ontario

Scrosoppi’s men’s and women’s teams have got early points on the board but are aiming to bounce back after last weekend’s defeats.

Back to winning ways

Scrosoppi play newly promoted FC London in the Men’s Premier on Sunday, as they look to put their 2-1 defeat to Alliance United behind them.

Despite the loss last weekend, the team have started the season well and have two wins on the board. Omari Cotterell has looked dangerous going forward, finding the back of the net twice in the first three games.

Their opponents on Sunday are still looking for their first three points of the campaign but have shown they can cause problems for teams in the Men’s Premier this season, having tied 2-2 with Alliance United in their opening fixture.

If results go their way, the reigning champions could end Sunday at the top of the table but getting back to winning ways against a newly promoted side is important for the team’s title aspirations.

More action on Sunday

In the Women’s Championship Scrosoppi host Unionville Milliken on Sunday evening. There were plenty of goals when the sides met last season, with game ending 7-0 and Sahara Zingano scoring a hat-trick.

Unionville Milliken currently sit above Scrosoppi in the standings at this early stage but a win for the hosts will help them keep pace with the sides at the top of the division.

League2 update

SFC’s Michael Crocco is the top scorer in the Men’s League2 Central Conference, but they squad are not back in regular-season action until next Thursday.

The women’s second team have made a strong start to the season by picking up 10 points from their first four games, including a big 5-1 win against Unionville Milliken on Wednesday.

Dates for the diary

With the season underway there are some big games to look forward to for all the Scrosoppi sides.

The men’s team will get their first taste of Men’s L1 Cup action on Thursday, May 22 when they host Winsor City. Scrosoppi received a bye to Round Two, where they were knocked out against Burlington last season.

Next week on May 23, Scrosoppi play current table toppers Tecumseh United in the Women’s Championship, and on Wednesday, June 11, they face Hamilton United who finished third in the 2024 standings and just a few points behind the SFC women.

Scrosoppi's teams return to action next weekend following a big night in the TELUS Canadian Championship.

Scrosoppi’s senior men’s team earned plaudits on Tuesday night after a gutsy display against the Canadian Premier League leaders, Atlético Ottawa, in the TELUS Canadian Championship.

After an early Andreas Vaikla save, Noah DeDominicis gave the hosts a scare by latching onto a creative Omar Marzouk header that broke through the Ottawa backline. The young striker sprinted towards goal and saw his effort beat the goalkeeper but he was denied by the post.

The action-packed start culminated in the CPL side’s opener through a deflected effort from Kevin Dos Santos. Vaikla then stepped up several times throughout the game to keep the score at 1-0, and Scrosoppi almost found an equalizer in the second half through Omari Cotterell but his deflected effort was cleared off the line.

As SFC pressed to draw level, Ottawa scored their second in the 86th minute through Samuel Salter to book their spot in the next round.

League matches

There were also Scrosoppi matches in the League1 Ontario League2 Divisions this week, with the men’s team losing to North Toronto but the women’s side coming out on top against Whitby with a 2-1 win.

Both senior Scrosoppi teams have the weekend off and return to regular-season action in League1 Ontario next weekend, starting with visiting Whitby in the Women’s Championship on Friday, May 9. Whitby are off to a winning start in the division and, this Sunday, are taking on an Oakville side who defeated Scrosoppi last time out.

Scrosoppi’s Men’s Premier team are back in action on Saturday, May 10 as they host Alliance United, who are currently second in the standings after a win and a tie from their opening two games. Alliance face North Toronto this weekend.

Key matchups: Atlético Ottawa

With the 2025 TELUS Canadian Championship fast approaching, it is time to take a look at the key matchups that could make a difference on Tuesday night.

Battle in the box

Tomasz Skublak has been one of Scrosoppi’s most important players in League1 Ontario over the last few years and helped fire the club to their first league title in 2024.

He has Canadian Premier League experience having played for Halifax Wanderers in 2019, and scored 35 goals for Scrosoppi in 33 regular-season games since joining in 2023.

The Men’s Premier Division’s reigning MVP could be facing an up-and-coming defender by the name of Noah Abatneh. The Toronto-born centre-back joined Atlético in January 2025 on a one-year deal, with an option for a second year, and scored his first goal for the club on April 19 against his former side York United.

The former Roma and Lazio academy player played 34 times for York last season and only turned 20 years old in September. In addition to defending, he also gets a lot of touches of the ball as Ottawa build their attacks.

Meeting in the middle

A crucial part of either team’s success in this fixture will be the winner of the midfield battle, and Atlético’s Manuel Aparicio versus Scrosoppi’s Orlendis Benitez Hernandez will certainly be an interesting one.

Aparicio joined the Ottawa club in March 2024 following a four-year period with CPL rivals Pacific. Since signing, his ability in the middle of the pitch has been a crucial part of Atlético’s play, leading their tackle tally last year with 88.

His seven goal contributions in 2024 proved he also has the ability in attack, and he has already scored against former club York this season, so it should be an interesting matchup against Benitez Hernandez.

The Cuban midfielder joined the Men’s Premier champions at the beginning of this season following a short stint at Forge. He scored 20 goals in 29 games during two seasons with Simcoe County Rovers, and was named the Midfielder of the Year and a First Team All-Star while helping Simcoe win their 2023 title.

He scored his first goal for Scrosoppi against Sigma nearly a week ago, and played in the Canadian Championship for Simcoe last season, so he’ll be coming into this with plenty of confidence.

Danger in the 10

One of Atlético’s most dangerous players going forward is Mexican attacking midfielder David Rodríguez. The 22-year-old is currently on loan from Liga MX club Atlético San Luis and scored two goals and bagged one assist from his opening three league games in the CPL.

John Yacou told League1 Ontario’s website that his Scrosoppi side prides itself on a strong defence. With a stunning defensive record in 2024, only conceding 12 goals in 22 games, and two clean sheets from their opening two matches this year, it will be no simple task for Rodríguez.

A key part of Scrosoppi’s defence is the man between the sticks, Andreas Vaikla, who joined in 2023. The former Estonia international was part of English Championship side West Bromwich Albion’s academy as a youth player and has had stints across Europe before landing in Canada.

Alongside a defence including 24-year-old Brayden Borutskie, who was also an important part of their 2024 title win, Vaikla has proved he can be a tough goalkeeper to beat, even for a finisher like David Rodríguez.

Opposition look: Atlético Ottawa

Unbeaten start to the season

Atlético Ottawa currently sit top in the Canadian Premier League (CPL) with two wins and a tie from their first three games.

They started the season with a 2-2 tie at home with Wanderers; following a disappointing start to the game, going 2-0 down after 47 minutes, they fought back with goals with David Rodríguez and Aboubacar Sissoko, and held on despite going down to 10-men with Tyr Walker’s red card.

Their second game of the season saw them travel to Vancouver where they came away as 4-1 winners thanks to another goal from David Rodríguez, along with Kévin dos Santos, Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla, and Monty Patterson.

The goals continued into their match against York United, where a stoppage time goal from Noah Abatneh helped them to a 3-2 win, in which they once again came back from behind to take the three points.

What happened last year?

Atlético had an impressive 2024 season, finishing third in the CPL table for the second time, behind Cavalry and Forge. The Ottawa side racked up 44 points, only finishing six points off the top of the table, before losing their playoff semifinal to Forge - the same team that defeated them in the playoff final in 2022.

In terms of the TELUS Canadian Championship, this is their first fixture against a side from outside the CPL. They suffered first-round exits in 2021 and 2022, losing to Valour and York United respectively, and quarterfinal defeats in 2023 and 2024 to Forge and Pacific.

Last season’s loss to Pacific was over two legs, with a 0-0 draw at home followed up by a 2-1 defeat on the road.

Players to watch

Atlético’s 2024 top scorer Rubén del Campo left the club at the end of the season to join UCAM Murcia, and their top assister Daniel Morer Cabrera’s loan ended, but they still have plenty of talent on show in 2025.

David Rodríguez started the season with a bang, providing two goals and an assist in his first two games from midfield. The 22-year-old is currently on loan at the club from Liga MX club Atlético San Luis.

Much of Atlético’s play last season was dependent on midfielder Manuel Aparicio, who led their tackle tally in 2024 with 88. The Argentinian contributed five goals and two assists in last season’s campaign, and got off the mark against York this season. He also has plenty of CPL experience.

Furthermore, central defender Amer Didić completed 1740 passes in their 28 matches last season, and leading the way this year is another defender – Noah Abatneh. He was part of Lazio and Roma’s academies and could be a player to watch, especially after his late winner last time out.

Winning starts to the new season

SFC men’s and women’s teams both secured victories in the opening week of the 2025 League1 Ontario regular season.

SFC men beat rivals

Scrosoppi saw off Simcoe County Rovers 1-0 in the opening game of the 2025 Men’s Premier Division, starting their title defence with a victory against tough opposition.

The two sides could not be separated at half-time, and SFC came closest to breaking the deadlock after the restart when substitute Noah Dedomincis hit the inside of the post.

It was Omari Cotterell who found the back of the net for SFC just moments later. The forward was in the right place and the right time to tap home a dangerous cross, giving his side the lead with 20 minutes to go.

Scrosoppi then held onto the victory and clean sheet to kickstart their season with three points.

Convincing win for SFC women

Scrosoppi are top of the Women’s Championship after their convincing 3-0 win against Rush Canada in the regular season’s opening weekend.

The first-half was a similar story to the men’s game – few chances as both teams settled into the new campaign. But the second period was much more clinical from the hosts.

Emily Dinatale opened the scoring just after the hour-mark with a powerful header from a corner kick, and Natalie Moynihan doubled the lead minutes later with a penalty.

Returning striker Aalayah Lully then got back among the goals by scoring her first of the campaign and Scrosoppi’s third to put the icing on the cake in her team’s divisional opener.

Coming up

The Men’s Premier team is back in action on Tuesday for a midweek match against Sigma, and another win would put them in a commanding position ahead of the weekend when the rest of the division take to the field.

The Women’s Championship team are back in action on Sunday when they visit Oakville, who narrowly lost in the opening week.

Here’s another reminder that Scrosoppi’s two League2 sides are kicking off their campaigns this week. The women’s squad are in action on Monday, April 21, with the men beginning their regular season a day later on Tuesday; the teams are taking on Simcoe County Rovers and North Mississauga respectively.

The regular season gets under way for our Scrosoppi teams this weekend.

Protect the crown

Scrosoppi are the reigning Men’s Premier Division champions and begin their season against Simcoe County Rovers this Saturday.

There is plenty of history between these sides, who battled it out in the 2023 Men’s Premier Final. Simcoe competed in the TELUS Canadian Championship last year and reached the Men’s L1 Cup Final after a resurgence in form during the second half of the Pro-Am season.

Neither team competed in last weekend’s Men’s L1 Cup after receiving byes to Round Two, so the upcoming clash with the Rovers will be a good test for SFC to start the season with their own Canadian Championship date looming.

If you can’t make the trip to Barrie, make sure to tune in on the League1 Ontario YouTube channel which will livestream the match for free.

Milestone women’s season

While the L1 Cup didn’t bring the start that SFC’s women’s team would have wanted – a 4-0 defeat against Pickering – there were plenty of learning points to take into the new campaign.

This year marks the 10th season of women’s soccer in League1 Ontario, which is a huge milestone for the women’s game here in Canada. SFC’s women’s team have goals to create their own history by gaining promotion from the Women’s Championship to the Women’s Premier – the top flight of the Pro-Am soccer pyramid.

SFC kick off the new campaign against Rush Canada, who were 5-0 victors in the Women’s L1 Cup last season, marking themselves as one of the danger teams heading into the opening weekend of the regular season.

Several stars from last season have returned to SFC, including Aalayah Lully, Jahkaya Davis, and goalkeeper Elisa Paolucci.

League2 action

The League2 Divisions begin next week, so if you’re looking for some midweek action, look no further than the SFC second teams aiming for silverware of their own.

SFC will compete in the first matches of the 2025 League2 Divisions, when the women’s second team travel to Simcoe County Rovers on Monday, April 21 and the men visit North Mississauga a day later.

Tomasz Skublak: “Hard work beats talent”

The Scrosoppi striker sat down with Dexter Abrams for League1 Ontario’s new YouTube show.

Tomasz Skublak has been a force to be reckoned with in League1 Ontario over the past few seasons, shooting Scrosoppi to the top of the Men’s Premier Division standings in back-to-back years.

Since joining SFC in 2023, Skublak has scored 35 goals in 33 regular-season matches – a prolific record that has made him one of the best forwards in Pro-Am soccer.

Skublak is the Men’s Premier’s reigning Most Valuable Player, and was the first interview in League1 Ontario’s new YouTube show, which was launched on Thursday, April 10 before a big weekend of L1 Cup action across the province.

He sat down with Dexter Abrams, who kicked off the interview by asking about Skublak’s preparation going into a new season.

“Essentially going through what I have to do on a daily basis to pay the bills – selling houses – and then going to training and making sure that when I’m there, I’m 100 per cent there,” said Skublak.

“Going in there, having a good attitude, communicating with the teammates that I have. Everyone understands each other’s roles and what kind of quality they bring, what characteristics they bring, and it’s just building on that.

“Having a great coach, good sessions, and high intensity, is the best preparation I can have – not to mention we are one of the teams that has a full-time athletic therapist there; he’s fantastic. If you take care of the little knocks here and there you have less big knocks.”

As well as previewing the new season, talking about pregame routines, and how to bounce back from mistakes, Skublak also provided advice to young people looking to progress in the game.

“With the young kids not only playing League1 but potentially getting opportunities in the CPL [Canadian Premier League] it definitely shows how hard they train and work on the pitch.

“The most important thing for them to have is a routine; number two is following it even when you don’t want to follow it. Then the third thing is being open to criticism from other people who have been there. Even now, I learn things from 19-year-olds that I never thought I’d be open to learning.

“Another thing that is super important for anyone trying to be consistent is that hard work beats talent. When talent isn’t working, hard work will definitely win, so put in 100 per cent effort and people will see that.”

Scrosoppi: New season schedule preview

Defending men’s League1 Ontario champions Scrosoppi begin their campaign on April 19, with the women’s team kicking off a day later. But what are the key matches to look out for in the upcoming season?

Opening fixtures

After their 2024 league win, the men’s team kick off their title defence with an away trip to Simcoe County Rovers. It will be the second of back-to-back league games between the two sides who faced off in the final game of 2024, with SFC running out as 3-0 winners.

That was the men’s side’s second time beating Simcoe last season, after a convincing 4-0 win over the Barrie-based team in June. Their rivalry from the 2023 Men’s Premier Division Final will no doubt continue into the new campaign.

After SFC’s successful second-place finish in their debut Women’s Championship season, they start the new campaign at home against 2024’s bottom-side Rush Canada – a team that SFC tied 2-2 with on the road and beat 1-0 at home.

They then travel to Oakville Soccer Club, a side that merged with Blue Devils in late 2024 following the latter’s relegation from the Women’s Premier Division.

After opting out of promotion to the Championship last season, the men’s second team start their League2 Central campaign with an away match at North Mississauga on April 22. This game is a day after SFC’s Women’s League2 side open their season against Simcoe.

Up for the Cup

Alongside their league campaigns, both the SFC men’s and women’s sides will compete in the L1 Cup – the province’s knockout competition for L1ON teams.

With how the Men’s L1 Cup bracket has fallen and SFC’s Round One bye, the club’s first opponents will either be Windsor City or Guelph United who face off on April 13. For the women’s team, they begin the tournament in Round One against Pickering on April 12.

Scrosoppi had the upper hand against Pickering in 2024, drawing 2-2 at home but beating them 3-2 in the reverse fixture in July. Waiting in the second round is Simcoe County Rovers who reached the Women’s L1 Cup semifinals last season.

Rivalries reignited

With the men’s title win, and SFC’s women narrowly missing out on promotion, there were several exciting matches in 2024 for both Scrosoppi first teams.

Arguably the men’s team’s most exciting match was a 4-2 win at home against North Toronto. After going 3-0 up after 63 minutes, a late two-goal scare was put to bed when Tomasz Skublak scored with seven minutes remaining.

SFC eventually finished above Vaughan Azzurri in second and Woodbridge Strikers in third respectively. With two ties against Vaughan Azzurri, and a 1-1 tie and a 2-1 win against Woodbridge Strikers, their unbeaten record against top teams helped them to the title.

North Toronto, Vaughan, and Woodbridge will all face SFC again in 2025, and likely challenge for the Premier Division title.

In the Women’s Championship last year, Scrosoppi finished four points ahead of third-placed Hamilton United despite only managing a point against their opponents in orange. SFC will be looking to set the record straight this season.

The women’s team’s biggest win last season was a 7-0 win over Unionville Milliken. SFC were the highest scoring team in the Championship last year, and it will be a feat this year’s squad will be looking to replicate as they bid for promotion.

Looking Back: Four things to remember heading into the new L1ON season

Get ready to support Scrosoppi in the new League1 Ontario campaign with our latest round-up.

League1 Ontario soccer is almost back, and if you’re unfamiliar with Scrosoppi’s story in the Pro-Am game, here’s four things you should know ahead of the 2025 campaign.

The rise of Scrosoppi

With 16 wins and only one loss, Scrosoppi powered themselves to the top of the Men’s Premier Division standings to win the title by four points ahead of Vaughan Azzurri in 2024.

SFC conceded just 12 goals in 22 matches, registering the league’s best defence, and were one of the most prolific going forward with 54 goals. Popular forward Tomasz Skublak led the club’s scoring charts once again with 12 strikes, ahead of Jacob Carlos who notched a further 10.

It was the second time in two years that SFC topped the regular-season standings after a similarly successful 51-point season in 2023. John Yacou’s side were eventually defeated in the Men’s Premier Division Final against Simcoe Country Rovers, but they returned in 2024 more determined than ever.

The last two seasons have shown Scrosoppi’s rise from previous campaigns. In 2021 SFC secured fourth spot in the Men’s West Conference with six wins and five losses, before finishing 12th in the 22-team division when the conferences combined in 2022.

Pipped to promotion

Scrosoppi fielded a League1 Ontario women’s team for the first time in 2024, and only needed 90 minutes to display their potential: they defeated Burlington 4-0 in the opening game of the Women’s L1 Cup with a brace each for Ella Cahill and Jahkaya Davis.

A week later, SFC narrowly lost their first game of the Women’s Championship in a five-goal thriller, but only failed to pick up points from two more games during the rest of the season.

With 10 wins in 18 games, SFC pushed eventual champions BVB IA Waterloo (now Waterloo United) all the way to the finish, with just a point separating first and second in the final standings.

With Waterloo promoted automatically, SFC pitched themselves against North Mississauga for the final place in next year’s L1ON top flight. But the Panthers proved too powerful and saved themselves from relegation with a 3-1 victory, leaving SFC to restart their promotion quest in 2025.

Undefeated season

The Scrosoppi men’s second team won the League2 Division Southwest Conference by winning 13 and tying once in a 14 game season, finishing the campaign with a huge 40 points.

Miles Green and Noah Dedomincis both scored in the playoff semifinal, but Vaughan Azzurri ran out 4-2 winners and moved on to the League2 Division Final.

Meanwhile in the Women’s League2 Division, SFC ended the season just five points shy of the eventual Southwest Conference winners. It was a very tight competition with seven teams within seven points of the leaders.

Both men’s and women’s SFC squads showed lots of promise, and some League2 stars may even be making their mark at Championship and Premier level this year as the club’s player pathway continues into the new campaign.

Players climbing to potential

There were lots of positive stories for Scrosoppi players in the offseason. Paiman Sultani played a combined 14 games across the Men’s Premier and League2 Division in 2024 and earned a call-up to the Afghanistan national team training camp in March.

That was after budding stars Marcus Channer and Matias Cortes signed professional deals with our friends at SC Vianense in Portugal. Channer in particular was a star in the Men’s Premier, playing more than 1,000 hours to help SFC to the title.

There were several League1 Ontario awards given to Scrosoppi players, with Tomasz Skublak, Ella Cahill, and Sahara Zingano among the deserved winners, in addition to division-winning coach John Yacou. Julian Gonzalez was also recognized as the Defender of the Year in the Men’s League2 Division.

Tomasz Skublak Re-signs with Scrosoppi FC!

After a season to remember, League 1 Ontario Men's Premier division Top Goalscorer and league Most Valuable Player, Tomasz Skublak, has opted to re-sign with Scrosoppi FC. Tomasz Skublak finished the season with 24 goals in just 17 games played. Often looking like a man amongst boys, Tomasz is looking to parlay last season's success with a repeat performance and possible professional trial in 2024. When asked about his return, Skublak says, "I'm ecstatic to re-sign with Scrosoppi FC this summer and return Scrosoppi FC to the top of the league table. Returning to a top-class organization like Scrosoppi FC was a no-brainer, and I really look forward to getting back on the pitch with the boys and Johnny (coach John Yacou), and a title to Scrosoppi FC."

In his off-season, Tomasz has been focused and taking his real estate career to new levels. As a sales representative with Platinum Lion Realty, Tomasz has become incredibly successful and has transferred his drive on the pitch to off the pitch, in finding his clients the best possible home for them. Scrosoppi FC now has a League 1 Ontario Women license!

Scrosoppi FC will compete in the 2024 League1 Ontario Women’s Championship division having been awarded the women’s license formerly held by Pickering FC.

Toronto, ON – (December 11, 2023) – Scrosoppi FC will compete in the 2024 League1 Ontario Women’s Championship division having been awarded the women’s license formerly held by Pickering FC.

Acquiring this license allows Scrosoppi to expand their women’s program which, in addition to age-group youth squads, fielded a team in the South West Conference of the Women’s Reserve Division in 2023.

Former license holders Pickering withdrew from both the L1ON Men’s and Women’s Premier Divisions after the 2022 season and the competition board began welcoming applications to acquire their licenses in April this year, both being transferred separately.

The 2023 Premier Division table was split to decide the top two tiers for L1ON in 2024, and due to these licenses not being represented on the field this past season, Scrosoppi will automatically play at Women’s Championship level next year.

Named after the patron saint of footballers, Luigi Scrosoppi, the club were founded in 2020 and made their L1ON debut in men’s competition the following year. They finished 12th in the Men’s Premier Division in 2022 and top of the regular-season standings in 2023, reaching the final of the playoffs and confirming their Men’s Premier spot for next year. Now Scrosoppi are hoping to use this success to inspire the growth of their women’s program.

Shayne Griffin, Technical Director of Scrosoppi, said: “Globally, the women's game has developed tremendously and there's a real push that women are represented equally, but we wanted to make sure that we did it organically in a way that we can develop some of our own teams and graduate them into the League1 environment.

“We were fortunate enough to bring in John Yacou who is the head coach of our men's team. He transformed the mentality and the culture of our League1 Men's program and was also the League1 Ontario Women's Coach of the Year in 2019. He will be managing our Women’s Championship team as well.

“We have a very supportive ownership group and they understand the pathway and what it takes to be successful; we've shown that on the men's side and they were very supportive in allowing us to also create that on the women's side this year.”

Matthew Braithwaite, Managing Director of League1 Ontario, said: “We are delighted to welcome Scrosoppi to the Women’s Championship for 2024.

“Scrosoppi’s recent transformation in the Men’s Premier Division shows the high standards that the club sets for players and staff, and now they have a chance to replicate this recent success in the women’s divisions.

Scrosoppi FC is excited to announce that Faris Ammari has been invited for Preseason with @scvianensesad in Liga 3 Portugal.

Faris has been a @league1ontario standout for the past two seasons and caught the attention of the staff at SC Vianense. Faris was the League 1 Ontario assists leader in 2022 and sits amongst the league leaders once again in 2023.

We are all incredibly proud of Faris, and excited for him to enjoy his experience with our club in Portugal.

Nathaniel Susnik of Scrosoppi FC leads SC Vianense to Championship title and league promotion in his first season.

After signing his first professional contract, and just one season playing with SC Vianense SAD, Nathaniel Susnik proved he's built for the international stage. In only one season with the SC Vianense SAD U19s, Nathaniel anchored the back line to an impressive championship campaign, leading them to the District Championship title, promotion to the National Championship division for next season. Nathaniel has garnered interest from top Portuguese clubs, has been offered multiple trials for Primeira Liga Portugal, and Liga 2 clubs, and will be exploring those in the next few months. Congratulations, Nathaniel! We are all proud of you and your accomplishments in such a short time, and looking forward to the next step in your career!

SC Vianense SAD wins in Amarante and goes up to Liga 3

WE ARE IN LEAGUE 3!

Today we proudly celebrate the promotion of SVC SAD to League 3!

It was with a clear victory by 3-1 in the stadium of Amarante FC that we conquered the first place in the promotion phase to League 3. In an incredible game, full of emotion until the end, SCV SAD gave the result back in the last 20 minutes of the game, with goals from Igarapé at 74` and Diogo Pereira at 85` and 90+6`.

In the stands were present more than 600 fans from Vianense, who showed all their strength, always in unconditional support to this great team.

SCV SAD ends this phase in first place with 11 points, 4 points behind the second, Lusitânia de Lourosa...

SC Vianense SAD U19s win the District Championship and are promoted to the National Championship Division for next year!

SC Vianense SAD U19 team beat Neves FC 4-0, in the last match of the promotion phase, played this Saturday at Campo Alferes Pinto Ribeiro.

Another match with the magnificent support of the Vianense fans, the first goal was at 32′ by Martim Sousa and just 4′ later, Pedro Vieira scored the second goal. In the second half, Pedro Morais and David Martins each added one more goal and closed the score at 4 goals for the U19 team that became district champion of the Football Association of Viana do Castelo.

Today, at the Football Festival in Valença, all the players and technical staff who together ensured promotion to the 2nd Division of the U19 National Championship, received medals, and lifted the District Champions Cup.

Another success story for SC Vianense SAD, which ends the 22/23 season with both teams moving up in their championships.

Congratulations SC Vianense SAD U19! We hope to continue to count on the presence and support of all Vianenses for the 23/24 season!
